GTI Vs Leon Cupra
« on: 28 February 2023, 20:15 »
Hi all. I am new to the forum but have been viewing since I bought my car a year ago. This poll maybe totally pointless being a GTi forum but let's see!!!

I have always been intrigued by the Cupra and mainly the 50 extra hp so I test drove one at the weekend which was for sale at a Seat dealership 3 miles away. Imo the drive is fantastic and it is a bit more exciting than the GTi however the interior and other aspects (push start/button, rev camera, ACC, heated seats) do stop me from taking the leap. My GTi is a manual and the Leon is auto and I do want my next car to be an auto.

My GTi service is due in April (c. £300). Two new front tyres required also required (c. £250) so seriously thinking of buying the curpa. I've been offered 20850 by webuyanycar after them viewing the car (original offer was 21575). The Cupra would cost me 2000 more with less miles and a year younger. PCP is the same monthly amount with a 2k deposit on the Cupra).

What are your thoughts? Many thanks.

Ps I did a search on this topic and the last one was active a while ago hence a new thread. Mods can move to old one thread if they would like.

No contest. The interior of any seat is  . I don’t think they compete. Why would you downgrade ? If your handy with a spanner you can service the GTi yourself with genuine parts and save a fortune. Just my 2c.

So you have £550 of work to carry out on the GTI, to avoid this you'd spend £2,000 for a car with a dsg box & a haldex to add to the servicing schedule, while downgrading your interior quality. Sounds worse than I mean it to but sometimes you need that prior to a financial decision.

Leon's have always been viewed as a poor man's golf, and their residual market values prove this. As a golf is always worth more than a Leon even at well over 100k miles in any of it's guises, I remember pre-covid seeing a 2017 Cupra with 20k miles for sale at £15/16k and it sat for a long time.

Personally I'd stick with the golf and just remap it if you want the extra power.

I've not been in a Leon but a friend has a similar age Ateca and whilst it's okay inside, I far prefer my Golf. As for the drive, I guess it must be similar to my TCR and yes, I'd agree it's well worth upgrading for the extra performance. Probably of little help however only you can decide. Have you test driven a DSG GTIP though? Might be worth doing before making a final decision.

I quite like the Leon and see your argument. It's a nice car and lovely to drive. Agree, the interior quality isn't quite up to Golf standards but you usually get more options fitted as standard over the Golf. What ever you do, I wouldn't sell to we but any car. Motorway give far higher prices on nearly new sought after cars like the Golf.

Welcome Edward.

As someone who owned no less than 5 examples of mk7 Golf I guess my own personal preference is clear but I do try and be pragmatic too.
Badge snobbery does wind me up so I’ll always push back against it when called for.

If you like a fairly plush interior (for the class of car) then the Golf easily wins in perceived ‘niceness’.
But add in said pragmatism and look at their DNA to skew the picture a bit. Basically most ancillaries from the HVAC controls and system, the wiring looms, radio, electric windows, washer bottle cap, exhaust rubbers, engine cover and so on are all common VW group bits. The Golf gets some shiny trims and the Leon gets black. It’s a perception thing.

The Golf GTI gets the Skoda tune EA888 engine and the Leon gets the Audi S3 motor with bigger turbo and uprated internals.

The Leon is the driver focussed package where dynamics and value count more than perceived luxury and the Golf is a Golf.

Springs to mind the Grand Tour episode where they compare the Jaguar F-Pace SVR, Range Rover Vogue & Bentley Bentayga.

The best person to actually answer this question is @Volkswizard, who just sold his Cupra for a Clubsport S despite it being virtually the same car at a fraction of the price.

That's good timing. As expected it seems the general consensus is to keep the GTi. One thing that does stick with me is the door quality of the seat. It seemed really thin and cheap and even the noise when I shut it was hollow.

Someone mentioned the auto GTi but these are nearly 5 grand more than a Leon cupra like for like. Our work pool car is one and that was the reason I bought my car in the first place but I went manual for more of a 'driving experience '.
