After 4.5 yrs it's time for me to get another car and I would have gone to an under year old MK8 GTi but none available within a reasonable distance which prompted me to look objectively at my usage which is around 120 ish miles p/week at the most on crappy pot hole ridden 50mph b roads, so I've decided to downgrade to a new MK8 1.5 Tsi R Line (only 128bhp version but I did get a good deal on it)
It will take some getting used to the drop in power and driving a manual again but no doubt I'll be back in a Gti at some point in the future.

The R Line is probably the pick of the bunch of mk8’s for looks so not such a bad choice - BUT personally I’d have kept the mk7 a bit longer if only doing that little mileage.

I don't know your other reasons to change but if it was me doing that usage and mileage I would have just keep using the current car.

I do less than 120 miles a week and have no intention of changing.

There was other reasons that went with my decision and for once money issues wasn't a factor.
In a twist I changed my order to the 150bhp version and should be picking it up soon...a Gti it will never be but for now it will be good enough for me until I get back into a Gti in the future

good luck with your purchase Zan I'm sure it will fit your needs, every car is a compromise and only you know what is right at the time.  What was right 4 years ago is not always the same now and going forward you never know what car you will be in.

I had something similar as a loan car when one of ours went in for a service. For getting about rural B roads where we live, the ride pliancy was good and I handed it back with the impression that it was better than I thought it would be. Not the feeling I had when I was loaned a Polo previously.

Hope a GTI finds its way back on to your drive again sooner rather than later.

Picked the car up and had a little drive out to get used to a manual again and for a modest 148 BHP it's not bad at all.
Performance wise it's a downgrade but as above it's more than adequate for my current needs.
Did a mix of dual carriageway and normal roads and getting 47.6 MPG according to the cars data, I know I won't get that on my daily commute but so far so good and I even don't mind the infotainment system and it's lack of buttons.
The only annoying thing so far is that lane assist is on by default and you have to go into the menu to switch off every time, it can be quite aggressive which is off putting so would rather have that switched off.

Does it have ACC cruise?
If so, start engine, press button on the tip of the left stalk (indicator stalk), you should see a menu flash up in the dash, press ok on right hand steering wheel pad, the lane assist should then untick.
Job done, takes two seconds

Thanks and it's in Kings Red metallic with the optional Bergamo 18" wheels, the R style seats are extremely comfy 
It does have ACC and I've just been out to try it and it doesn't have the button on the indictor stalk.
However I have just noticed on the steering wheel there is an assist haptic button which when pressed brings up an assist menu between the rev/speedo where you can select to switch off/on lane assist, I never used ACC or even the speed limiter in the GTi so tbh I was dismissing that side of the steering wheel lol
