Pattern on rear disks?
« on: 17 December 2022, 11:43 »
Looking to buy a GTI and both its rear disks look like this. Is that a normal pattern?

Do they look like new discs??

I've never seen any discs look like that, it almost looks like machining marks from when they were made.

All I have is the photos, haven't travelled to see it in person yet.

Both the outer edge and inner hub look a nice clean silver colour so i would guess they are probably new discs and the patterns you refer to are just machining marks.

Could possibly be marks from the rear pads from when the parking brake was last applied if the car has not been moved far? Edit - just seen the marks go all round so very unlikely.

If the car was a performance pack it would make even more sense to be machining marks from new discs since the rears don't get used a massive amount as is unless on adaptive cruise control.

Could be solved be a quick "Did the car get new rear discs recently?" question to the seller, rather than us speculating.

Can't say I've ever seen this and I've changed discs and pads on cars many times.

Almost looks like the pads are creating that pattern which can't be good? Could be that the anti corrosion wasn't cleaned off properly before fitting or potentially counterfeit / cheap disks which are unfortunately not uncommon if bought from ebay.

Otherwise as others have said maybe machining marks, but never seen it like that before....

I did think that myself - its almost as if the rear brakes are pulsing on and off to be creating that pattern.

I've fitted hundreds of discs and pads and never seen a pattern like that before.

Pretty sure it is just the way that it has been machined. It looks far too regular to be caused by anything else.

My car came with new discs on the rear, and it took months for the machining marks to wear off as the rears are so lightly used.
