First post - heaters blowing cool air help
« on: 23 November 2022, 21:44 »
Hey all!

New to the forum. I have a 18 GTI DSG in Silver for 13 months and I love it.

Recently, the fans are blowing cool air, doesn’t happen all the time but can happen while driving.

Does this happen to anyone else? Has anyone had this problem that has fixed it?

Thanks in advance!

A bit obvious but have you  checked the coolant level? You could try and recalibrate the climatronic flaps as a first check. Switch on the ignition and hold the ac button down at the same time as the button that directs the air into the car at face level. Release the buttons and the lights on the buttons should flash. This checks the flaps move their full range and returns them to the normal setting. Switch off after they stop flashing. Another possibility is the coolant thermostat if the heater temp varies when driving. Does the water temp gauge fluctuate? Have you run a fault check using obd11. Always a good pointer to possible issues.

I expect the experts on the forum will have other suggestions.

I had a similar issue on a brand-new Mk7 GTI. After investigation, they said they would have to remove the dash to replace the heater so I rejected the car. No way I was going to let them rip out the dash on a new car!

Hope yours is something simple.

Isnt this the heater matrix issue where the silica bag splits?

That was what I was thinking it might be.

Thanks for the replies.

I topped the coolant off about 3 months ago but I will check that again after work.

It usually stays hot and then suddenly it will just go cool

It will be worth checking your silica bag. Even if it isn't the problem this time it is worth removing it to save issues at a later date...

You should be able to feel it if you shove a finger into the expansion tank. It is at the 2-3 o'clock position when looking towards the driver seat from the front.

Have you done a flap recalibration? Instructions can be found for the system you have on YouTube.

I’m sure the techs at Vw told me this is normal, the car gets up to temperature then the heating lowers to match the temp you have selected, and sometimes it’s cold air out the vents, which is rather annoying

Unless it is in auto mode, you should get warm air constantly by selecting a high temp on the dial and having the fan on.
