To close out my change from the GTI TCR to 128Ti a final comparison review.

Clocked over 2500 miles in the 128Ti now through all the driving modes, from the day to day, right through to the spirited, and all on roads that previous cars travelled on, and so feel can state with some certainty how it stacks up now against the GTI TCR which is pretty close to where the 128Ti is pitched against.

Would give the GTI TCR 9/10 and the 128Ti 7.5/10

The GTI TCR is obviously borne from the 2013 cabin design but did have the latest media and driver display and some nice Alcantara touches, and bespoke designs, it was a nice place to sit, and the BMW, being a 2019 design is similarly as really nice place to be, and the media system and interaction is exceptionally good. Would say its marginally the 128Ti that wins due to large clear screen and slick media, with seamless, wireless Apple Play. But it’s closer than thought would be.

There is some personal dislikes, not really bonded yet with the fly by wire gear selection, still finding myself checking what selecting and just not fluid with it, which imagine would be same struggle in a MK 8, and the auto hold is not as seamless as the GTI TCR, it can be mildly jerky at times,

Love the heated steering wheel, been huge plus this winter, and the auto park has grown on me, use it for tight parks, and then adjust last bit myself, though if in a hurry, you do it yourself! Its way too slow if anyone is waiting on you.

Do not quite walk up to the 128Ti with the loving eyes of the GTI TCR, as think that was kitted out superbly in the Pure Grey, Reifnitz with Akra tips, but the 128Ti does have its own admirable stance, and the signature alloys are really nice design, with the red elements of brake caliper (a first for BMW) and red accents, with the Ti, making it stand out as something different.

Build quality on 128Ti is superb, good quality materials, nothing moves, no squeaks whatsoever, but again, the GTI TCR was similar, so the BMW may shade it, but again marginally.

The GTI however wins hands down in the handling and drive, there is a little aloofness to the handling of the 128Ti, with some evident torque steer, and you feel that you are sitting a lot higher, and even though the suspension is passive, and expectation was for  it to be desirably firm, it feels close to the DCC comfort setting for the GTI.

Find the gearbox too smooth and linear, both up and down the gears, which suppose is a positive to how well it manages the gears, but particularly on braking, quite like to feel the gears shifting down ala the DSG,.

Its super quick though, feels no slower than the TCR in straight line, it really goes! and in town handling is super smooth and quick, so it does have some short burst engagement, but open up on a winding stretch and that ride, in height and softness and slight aloofness in steer becomes evident and is the mark and a half detraction.

So, for the large majority of the time, where want to poodle around with everyone else in comfort, the 128Ti is a 9/10 car, my wife loves it for that aspect, it feels premium and ride is comfort, but for me, that goes against it at the times I want it to convert to something edgier, as its marginally too soft in steering and the ride. GTI TCR was 2 cars in I and the 128Ti is 1 ¾ cars in I

In summary, BMW have done a really good job at a GTI, the 128Ti is a great car, with lots to like, not least the premium cabin and media, but they just need to sharpen up its ride and steering for a winding stretch to take it up into the 9/10 range from the 7.5 giving it now.

Great review Hertsman, strange as I always thought the BMW would be the sharper drive. Years of advertising sunk in I suppose! Sounds like you are enjoying it which is great, but not a keeper?

Was little surprised as none of reviews mentioned that hint of aloofness and vagueness when pushed on, but its definitely there.

For 98% time its a great car, so am enjoying it a lot, but it just fades when you want it to excel.

Its not a keeper, and as a company lease it just goes back, so can drive it quite freely and enjoy, and I will likely going back to late MK 7.5 Golf R in about 12 months, which is not obviously for the full on engagement, but have flip flopped between AWD and FWD in last 15 years and just due a cycle in AWD again and as had a MK 7 Golf R, do know exactly what will be getting in experience,

As ever, really good to read your thoughts Hertsman.
We’ll sum up the 128Ti as “a good experience but not an enduring one” then?

And you still have that beautiful ED35 for your VW fix.
An R would therefore make a good stable mate for the GTI, with one being AWD it means you won’t have two overtly similar drives, yet there’ll be that genetic similarity you’re so familiar with, and there’s always the option of a Royal Steering Wheels alcantara wrap which means you wouldn’t miss the heated wheel quite so much…

With all the words written prior and since, think you nailed what should have been all the reviewers headline for the 128Ti in one line  “a good experience but not an enduring one”

Be looking for the unicorn of Golf R, with Akra, Sunroof, Leather and Oryx so will be prepared to wait sometime though would likely settle somewhere between that for the right car, but now looked over the fence, its convinced me that back home to performance Golfs is where heart is :)

Will miss the heated steering wheel though!! haha, so alternative comfort options will be sought

Have you seen Oryx? It's okay but the pearl effect rarely shows, I don't mind it as I have it but I certainly wouldn't pay extra for it.

Maybe that’s because you only wash yours twice a year Watts?

Hertsman, that car could well be out there given a decent budget and patient wait.
After some of the horror stories on here I’d be scared of having one with a sunroof but aside from that the spec sounds extremely desirable and ironically would cost about the same now as the buyer might have paid new three or four years ago!
With R’s you’ll know 7 out of 10 will have been hammered, 2/10 will have been used and treated fairly normally and that remaining 10% will have been cherished. The nice ones are out there..
I’d quite happily move back to a bong free existence with a mint low spec 7.5R or TCR myself. I’d miss that steering wheel though 😁

A friend of mine has a MK7 in Oryx white, and he was recently hit by another car (nothing too bad but requiring painting of the front bumper sand nearside wing). The approved body shop have now tried 4 times to get a paint match, and my friend says he can still see a difference in the shading. He spoke to the owner of the body shop who admitted that VW Oryx white is a mare to get looking just right and is one of the hardest colours to match, and he doubted it would ever look like it did from the factory !.

That's a shame as its a lovely colour, but you can see why that is the reality and really good to know as not something would want to be involved in as once there is perceived to be a mismatch it seems never ending due to everyone likely having a different view to what looks right at the margins and its usually the owner who has that mismatch nag in their head the most.

My Golf R, Lapiz Blue was a bit of a knock magnet requiring rear bumper and new passenger rear door from separate events and I could not tell they had been repainted, so that's a positive experience for that colour.

Fortunately there is a lot of Golf R out there and there is no real bad colour, be open to the whites, Lapiz and Grey, so will start searches for the best car with the options looking for and then if colour is something like.

Shame they did not do limestone grey on the MK 7.5 as always kicked myself a little bit for eliminating so early and not seeing one in flesh first
