Software update x 3(or 4)
« on: 04 October 2022, 17:57 »
Had my GTI nearly 2 years and it’s been a great drive but has been plagued by regular software problems. One of the annoying things is that it won’t update the “shop”. I know this is a minor thing but it should work!
It’s currently at the dealer, this being at least the 3rd time for this issue. I have a courtesy car. Rang the dealer tonight who said they are in contact with VW technical support but the issue won’t be resolved until at least tomorrow. The receptionist said she needs the courtesy car for another customer on Friday and if my car isn’t sorted I would have to book it in again! My feeling is stuff that, get my car sorted and then you can have your courtesy car back. What do you guys think?

Were you actually going to purchase anything from the “shop”? Is there anything worth purchasing from there even? Or do you just like browsing whilst stuck at traffic lights?
But yes it should work, though not the most terrible thing in the world if it’s just being glitchy.

I’ve had my mk8 for nearly 22 months and have never had the software updated. Admittedly I don’t use all of the features and some I’ve never tried. On odd occasions my car’s UI software throws a complete sh*t-fit but those days are rare and it’s often down to either atmospheric conditions or lighting (the car does act up if it’s been parked in the shade on a bright day on occasion) but generally it’s perfectly ok.

You can’t really blame a dealer for things out of their direct control, it’s a bit unfortunate that they need the car back but they only have so many and it’s not a serious issue your car is in for.

It’s a good job I don’t work in customer relations or there’d be lots of people with missing teeth…

You’re right in what you say but if I return the courtesy car I’ll have to book mine in again and go through the whole process yet once more. I’ll see what they say tomorrow and make a decision.

Really frustrating from your position and the worst of it is the lack of faith in it actually getting properly sorted no doubt. That’s one reason I’ve never bothered booking mine in for the sporadic glitches - I have little to no faith in everything being properly resolved so while it’s perfectly liveable I’ll live with it, it’s less stressful than going back and forth to dealers.

I’d certainly speak to the dealership tomorrow and see what they can come up with, maybe VW HQ can assist them with finding you alternative transport (unlikely but a long shot worth querying) if it means putting you back to square one as regards their diagnosis should your car leave the dealer with you.
With a bit of insistence hopefully they’ll find a work around, otherwise you’ll have to request a block booking of the loan car regardless of how long the fault takes to rectify if a subsequent booking is the only option right now.

It’ll be interesting to know how you do get on, hopefully you’ll hear something positive.

Hi peterfaldo,
When you have some spare time, have a read through the Mk8 software issues pages. Think it is currently up to 61?
Included are Mk 8 GTI etc. owners' tales of fun and games with VW, their Dealer network, software problems, hire car availability. the list goes on.
My own tale of woe is included too. 2 months without my GTI whilst a part was sourced from Germany. All because of a requested update.
Great car when it works.

Well the update is the dealership is still trying to fix my update issue. I was informed my login details work in another vehicle which points to a hardware issue, probably a control unit which VW is reluctant to authorise until all other options are exhausted because the cu is expensive. Anyway they’re letting me keep the courtesy car

I hope and pray that it's not the same issue that befell mine.
That needed an ECU too. Thats when the fun started.

In the end a new ECU was fitted (didn’t have to wait too long) and this fixed the issue😀

Well, that's great news! Let's hope no more visits till you are due service.
Apart from a slight phantom oil leak {is it from the Turbo, is it from the gearbox?} mine seems ok for now. TBF the Dealer is doing its best to trace it, so we'll see what transpires.
Nearly time for new Tyres and Alloys to cheer me up!
