Amp install with Gamma head unit
« on: 19 October 2005, 19:23 »
Hi,
I have an amp and sub I wish to install in my golf. It currently has a Gamma head unit and I would rather keep this than buy a new head unit.
Does anyone know of a way I can add the amp without losing the current speakers?
Thanks

you may have a problem as the gamma headunit doesnt have any pre outs so you cannot connect the amp to the headunit thus not getting any sound

the gamma unit does have pre outs, you have to buy a special plug £14 that plugs into the back and then has female rca leads to connect your usual amp leads to

ill try and find the place that sells the lead

You can use an amp with a Gamma headunit, but as it does not have pre-outs you have to convert the speaker output to line level output (ie speaker cable to RCA cable).  You can buy adapter leads, usually made by Autoleads, at any decent car audio shop (incl Halfrauds I believe) which will allow you to do this.  You can then wire your amp from your newly created RCA cables!  Job done.... :smiley:

Thanks for the quick responses. Kniterider I like the sound of your solution, will look forward to further info regarding where I can purchase this magical adaptor. Not so keen on the idea of converting speaker wires to rca's, surely I will lose the use of 2 of my four speaker outputs?

I may be mistaken but I think Kniterider is talking about the same solution as I am.  Not having the back of a Gamma unit to look at I am not sure you can plug directly into the unit.  You will not lose any of your output either as the four front speaker wires are converted to one set of RCA and the rear four speaker wires are converted to one set of RCA therefore giving you two outputs (front and rear).  In a nutshell all you are doing is changing the way in which the signal is sent from the head unit.  It also depends on the kind of amp you are going to run on how you wire it all up.  For example, if it is a four channel amp with only one RCA input then you would only require on output RCA from the headunit.  You would lose your fader function in this scenario but the system would be set up using the gain controls on the amp.  By using a four channel amp and using one input you can then use the second RCA output from the head unit to run an amp for a sub.

Have a look here - could the Blaupunkt/Phillips lead do the trick?  I would really need to look at the back of the Gamma unit:

i have a amp & sub running off my standard gamma stereo.. you need one of these baby's PC3-11

£8.99 from here ----> http://www.nexxia.co.uk/OEM_Head_unit_items/replacement_head_unit_leads/philips.htm

all it does is plug in the back of the stereo and you atach your RCA's that run from your amp to them, it even has a amp remote wire!!  :cool:
