Oil temperature?
« on: 12 July 2022, 15:46 »
My oil temperature briefly hit 180c in my 7.5 pp having followed a hgv for a while and then overtaking in third before dropping back to 150/160. Never had this temp in any other car. Is this normal? Is the hot ambient temp to blame?

As Madstaff says, 110 c is about as high as many of us have ever seen on these engines....
I would have thought the engine management system would have lit the dash up with lights and put the car into limp mode. tp prevent any damage to the engine?.... Run a few OBD tests to see what codes you find, there may be an issue with cooling fans not working?

That’s hot, very hot. 180 Fahrenheit is about 80 Centigrade?

Are you sure it was 180c? What was your coolant temperature at?

Operating temperature for the oil on the factory tune should see 100-110c and going up to at most 120c+- under high load.

Water temp was steady at 90. Will run a scan tonight to see what that shows. No emls showing. I regularly see 140 for the oil.

Either the guage is faulty or you are running sunflower or cooking oil? An oil temp of 90, suggests an efefctive cooling system, or again faulty guage (unlikely).

A quick google suggests high performance car oils start to break down at around 125 degress C and are almost ineffective above 135 degreeS C ?

Even allowing for a margin of error, I can't see the car making progress with an oil temperature of 180 degree C.

Only one fault code for second fob low battery. I think it must be a faulty sensor although I would have thought that would show as a fault? Dealer filled with 0w20 at the last service 6 weeks ago.

Faulty temp sensor or a problem with the oil heat exchanger perhaps??

That is the wrong oil, 5w30 or 0w30 but not 0w20.
