Discs and Pads
« on: 06 July 2022, 17:31 »
Any TCR owners, have you changed pads and or discs and at what mileage?  Other owners you too.

Just had pad wear light but doesn’t show if front or back and wondered at what mileage pads are expected and also discs.

Reason I ask for TCR mainly as dual vented discs and I know will be £700+ for front D&P and want to make sure local VW do go “yeah you need discs done mate!” Discs look good still.

What’s your mileage? The discs should be fine. Only the front pads have the wear sensor and normally only on one side. Changing of discs would normally be after 2 pad changes.  For example, I changed my first set of rear and front pads at 100,000km. And I don’t drive easy.

Just buy them from VW and then fit yourself or get a good specialist to fit them. It really is not a difficult job if you are handy with a spanner. Rears are a different story with with electric handbrake which requires coding to retract. Also, when the light goes off for the brakes you still have some meat left on the pads. I would say at least 1,000 miles

Related - On my last MOT (I've got a regular GTi) the garage recommended I change my front discs and pads due to "the wear being just lower than the recommended limits from VW for the GTi". Yet I still passed the MOT with no minors. Does that sounds correct?

As others have said. You will save a fair bit getting them yourself and then finding a local garage to fit them. It's not a VW specialist kind of job and a local will do the same (if not better) job for less

Pads should have more than 2mm of braking compound left (vw spec). The discs should not have a large lip at the edge. If you do not have an advisory then you should be OK for a while. Should have asked for the measurements. If you can't do it yourself then an indie is quite capable of doing it. Just make sure you get good quality parts.

I don't think £300 is a hugely unfair price for supply and fitting, as long as they are using good quality bits.

Decent pads are about £40 upwards, and a paid of decent coated discs £120 or so. So that leaves £140 for fitting.

Having said that in the past I have had good results mixing cheaper (But still coated) discs such as Comline or Juratek with good quality pads such as ATE, Jurid etc. If the TCR uses the same 340mm discs as my PP GTi then you can get a pair of coated discs for about £80

You may want to spend extra for better stuff if you track the car, but for road use they should be more than adequate.

Genuine front disc pads from VW are £144-66 +vat.

(Front discs are £164-09 +vat each.)

So £308 for genuine pads fitted isnt that bad, the labour is about £110 +vat, unless they charge for brake cleaners, disposal of parts, etc in which case it would bring the labour down a little.
