Starter motor not turning.
« on: 19 October 2005, 17:14 »
Just developed a new problem in my 1990 8v GTi.

A couple of times now when I go to start it, I get a kind of graunching noise and the starter motor doesn't turn over.  After about 5 or 6 tries it will suddenly start as normal.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the replies, seems to have got a bit better now.

How much is a brand new starter solenoid, couldn't seem to find it listed on GSF.

If it's pricey I might have to look at yours Blue, how much we talking?

If it sticks again, tap it gently with a hammer, can some times free them up a bit.

my wife had the safe problem about 5 weeks ago. turns out cylinder 4 was filling up with water once the engine was stopped when hot due to pitting in the cylinder head. conciquently just had a skim and new gaskets cost me £255
might be woth cecking if the new starter doesnt cure it.

I think to get a new starter motor it is an exchange policy, not sure how much they are, i know my old Astra GTE was about £50 for an exchange!
