Mk3 Transmission and Axle how much punishment?
« on: 28 October 2003, 14:57 »
Hi there, I'm a newbie, :)

I'm getting a new mk3 Golf daily driver, having had a 1972 VW Camper as my daily driver previously.  The Mk3 is only a standard 1.8 CL, I just wondering how much I could increase BHP and Torque by before the gearbox and axle(s) start to become unreliable.

I'm not looking for stupid bhp, but I'm looking after boreing, polish ported, high compression heads and all the associated bits at about 130-145 BHP as a realistic figure.

Would the car take it?

130-145 bhp, i think thats a bit unrealistic for 1.8cl. You will probably have to put a better suspension on, and uprate the brakes.

Well it wouldn't stay 1.8 for a start :D  ,.. brakes are obviously going to be uprated as soon as any engine work is performed, and suspension would be replaced and tuned depending on power output and how the thing drives (I'm not looking forward to power steering),..

But, I'm just concerned about the front axle and standard gearbox being able to take more torque.  I won't bother even looking at tuning the engine if it means a costly axle and gearbox replacement/rebuild.

The standard set up should be able to cope, depends how far you want to go!

I'd take a big naturally aspirated 6cyl over a forced induction 4 any day.
1997 Tornado Red GTi 8v - The Fastest HotBox on Fife's roads.

Modifications -

1 x Kenwood KDC-7024M
1 x Dull Aluminium Golf Ball Gearknob. Clearly worth about 10bhp on its own.
