When my mk2 got damp I used some 'blue roll' type hand drying paper stuff... Like you get in the bogs like...  and patted it 'up' the insides of the car to see how hight the damp went. Then I found out it was a combination of door cards and a ruddy great hole behind the dash due to a f*&kwit alarm 'installation engineer'....

See how far up the moisture goes...

The back seats are now in my living room, and the carpet pulled up enough for me to get my VAX in and suck up the litre of water  (shouldn't be happening to a 3yr old car?) Spoke to my mate in vw and he says it could be coming in through the windscreen (Ive had a new one) which he has known of, or maybe where the bonnet pull cable goes through the bulkhead.I park the car with the front facing upwards and he says this could be why the water is getting into the back.tomorrow if the weathers dry the front seat is coming out,the carpets coming right up and I'm going to ask my good old neighbor Gaz8512 to try and wash away my car with his hosepipe whilst I sit in there with a hot flask of tee and look to see where the waters peering in from.I'm hoping a plug or summut has dropped out underneath. Will keep you informed.

If your car has had an alarm fitted, check the alarm wiring harness hasn't been squeezed through a grommet designed for something else. As I said I had a tw@t do the job and he fudged it through the bonnet pull cable grommet. The result was that the opening through the rubber was kinda figure eight shaped, leaving a space for water to come in. Luckily for me I could get to the back of it without removing the dash. But on a mk4 I dunno....

is the carpet wet at the front/pedal area of your car?? if not i dont think it would be a windscreen prob, if its just from the drivers seat back it could be your drivers door seal knackered and its getting in there or the window, the rear screen wash hose runs in the roof, try your rear washwipe if your not getting any water to the rear screen the hose could have split/broken (common mk4 prob) and be running down into car. i think on some of the mk4's with air con there was a dampness prob inside something to do with the aircon condensation drain or sumthing...

Think Ive found the problem. The bonnet pull cable seems to have lost its grommet, thus leaving a nice 20mm hole. The hole is flat horizontaly if you know what I mean so any water what so-ever can run into it.On looking up under the dash I can see where it has been getting in.What I can see then is, the water soaks up into the underlay and stays sodden until it has somewhere to run, cause I park my car on an incline with the front facing upwards the weight of the sodden water slowely moves to the back.I wouldnt have thought it wouldnt go over the seat mounting bump in the floor but there are holes and swages in the floor (the way the car was built) where the water can run through. The drivers seat is now in my living room aswell while my carpets are pulled up drying.I got the VAX again and sucked up another litre and half of water. I think this has been like this for a while and getting worse day by day.
I would advise you all to check your cars to make sure the grommet is sound on yours.I found a make do grommet in my shed and siliconed it in for now until i get the proper one which is only a few quid from the stealership.
Check yours now !!
