I’ve had another dealer phone out of the blue today asking if I’d consider selling my R. This is getting crazy.

I had my local BMW dealership call me and ask if I wanted to sell my BMW.... the BMW they never sold me and I didn't buy anywhere else...

I get calls like that  - asking me why I  didn't claim compensation for that accident I had (that they have no details for).

Does anyone know if these quotes from the likes of WBAC, Motorway, Autotrader etc take into account factory options, or are they unaware of them and just assume you have a bog-standard car?

Most factory options probably make very little difference to the valuations offered by the likes of WBAC - I doubt they’re even aware of them from the details you input on their websites. I’d say it’s also very unlikely that they’d adjust their indicative valuation upwards to reflect options when they see the car either - more likely they’ll reduce it if they find a small paint chip or scratch that wasn’t declared when the indicative valuation was provided. Those options do make a difference to the dealer resale price though, as they make the car more attractive to prospective buyers.

Those options do make a difference to the dealer resale price though, as they make the car more attractive to prospective buyers.

Trouble is, dealers generally offer less than Motorway in the first place. Got the impression they were unaware of the optioned wheels on my Polo GTI+ and when I mentioned them, didn't change their price at all.

For your average family car that's true, but I imagine well optioned performance Golfs are always more desirable over bog standard. When the dealers come to sell your car they won't hesitate to advertise these options and price accordingly.

True, a well optioned car will be more desirable, and will probably mean it’ll be on a dealer’s forecourt at a higher sale price than a less well optioned equivalent car of a similar age / mileage. However, it won’t mean a car buying service such as WBAC or Motorway or a motor trader will offer you more than they would for a less well optioned car - the likelihood is they won’t - and as Fred has said, most extra cost options have low or no residual value if a buyer uses a car buying service to dispose of their car.

Whether the salesman tries to tell you that "those 90% tints are a rare option" or "look its in a pearl colour, how lovely" actually makes zero odds and he hasn't even marked it up in the first place vs another of the same age/condition/mileage GTI.

Really, don't fool yourself, the options you pick are pretty much money lossed straight away unless you sell to someone privately.

Meant to say ‘more desirable to prospective buyers’ - especially if they consider certain options as must-haves. Agree, options such as 90% tints won’t make a car more desirable in the eyes of the motor trade than a car without them, nor will they have any impact on sticker price.

I never go crazy with the options list when I buy a car because I’m aware most options lose most - if not all of their value, and the cars on my shortlist tend to be pretty well specc’d so I rarely feel the need to add too much. On my current car, I paid for larger alloys, reversing camera and an extra cost paint colour.

Things that definitely DO make a difference are Performance Pack.... that definitely makes sense, you'd have been crazy to buy a Mk7 GTI from new without it.

Not because OMG 1000000mph, but simply because it really is THAT much more desirable down the line.

Sunroof maybe, leather maybe..... its the things which let people see what they are getting. But the "extra" will be a fraction of what you paid for it.

DCC....rear camera...park assist...navpro...HK...heated seats... meh can't see it, won't pay for it. Wheels? Nope, tyres are more expensive, wheels can easily be changed.

At the end of the day, for some buyers it’s not necessarily all about the initial cost or retained value of options, and which are the ‘right’ options to go for. There’ll be an enjoyment factor associated with certain options for some buyers that add to the overall ownership experience of a car, and that’s something they’re prepared to pay extra for, irrespective of what - if any - impact those options have on the car’s value come sale time. I dare say that quite often, they won’t be the most sensible options if viewed purely from a financial perspective.

I dare say that buyers of nearly new used examples of any car make / model will be very grateful to the first owner if they plundered the options list to satisfy their need to max out on that enjoyment factor .
