Is the R the only MK8 Golf with 4 pipes? If so, I saw the back of a white one today. The only badging on the back was the awful but in trend stretched G   O   L   F.

The R Line is very different to the R at the rear. Here's a an extract from the VW brochure.

Long Since: 1981-84 Mk1 Golf GTI (Black);
Long Since: 1984-86 Mk 2 Golf GTI (White);
Long Since: 1986-88 Scirocco GTX (Graphite)

Gone: 2016-18 Mk 7 Golf GT TDI; (Silver)
Gone: 2018-20 Mk7.5 Golf GTI DSG (Red)
Gone: 2020 - Mk 8 Golf GTI DSG (White)

Yep, one is blacker than a goth’s lipstick and one is the colour of radioactive wee, pretty different!
To casual observers they look very similar in the same was as S-Lines look like S’s and AMG Lines look like AMG’s and so on.

Managed to test drive an R yesterday, dealer demo first UK cars so 18's, DCC and pano roof in Lapiz.

Decided that the wait was getting too long for the ED45 and still not sure on the red striped wheels or graphics down the side so thought why not, never had an R before after 5x GTi's in a row (ED30, Mk6, ED35, Mk7, ED40)

Compared to the mk8 Clubsport I drove before Xmas which was also an early dealer demo vanilla spec, the R felt that bit more special in every way to me.

I currently have a much loved ED40 with some options, but don't want to let it depreciate a lot further now the Mk8 is here and I like the mk8 in general, but found the Clubsport and GTi in general a bit cost cut in certain areas, and a step down from the ED40. I'm not sure the ED45 would be any better, and its more than likely to cost more than the R and mainly due to the exhaust which I don't feel is needed.

So, the R drives great, much more involved and I was really suprised between Race mode and Comfort settings, I thought the interior might put me off with all the blue but quite nice really, so much so I am about to pull the trigger on one with Performance Pack, DCC and Winter pack.

Praise indeed from you!
I don’t think the Ed40 will lose masses more ££££ any time soon, it has quite a following.

The R was always going to be the standout model of mk8 as it’s the performance brand to carry VW forward and the FWD chassis has been developed about as far as it can go to handle the power without dumbing it down too much.
The only downside is the R will be absolutely everywhere in a year or two so depreciation could go either way depending on supply vs demand.
Your spec is probably the best one to go for but personally unless I got an unbelievably good deal I’d probably wait and see if they do an R Anni in the next year or so...

Yes your right about it being the HALO one and having Jost Capito develop it was always a good sign, as his CV is very good.

I did think on the R anni and that would be a cracker I am sure, I am also sure we will see plenty of R's on the road, and its a good car so can be expected. I think I'd come back for a ED50 though if they did it right.....  :wink:

I've pushed my log standing dealer to match DTD price which they have and they have allocation, so I am thinking its a good sign.

Sounds good so far - actually having allocation is a good sign!

What colour have you gone for?

It’s really interesting to see you’ve gone for an R over a 45 which speaks volumes as you’re an actual enthusiast who can properly drive as opposed to someone promoting themselves on video or published text.  :cool:

I concur with the look and general idea of the R over the CS, while the Ed45, appears nothing more than a slight make over on what we know up to now?

I'm not sure I follow that a concern over depreciation on a well specced Ed40 can be answered by purchasing a new mk8 R? :)

I honestly believe my well specced Ed40 will lose less money than a new mk8 R over the next 2-3 years?
