Oil pressure gauge

Yippie!!!  My MK1 is taxed, tested and rolling (gotta get another 700 miles this week before TSR dyno on Friday)
 
Anyway.  1600 GTi with the air-oil cooler setup.  I have put an oil pressure sender in to the top or the oil filter housing and conected it to my VDO gauge.  Nowt happens, tried swaping the connectors with the one on the head, still nowt.  I have got feed and a good earth to the gauge.  What am I doing wrong?  Please help, as this is one of many teething problems that are getting on my t*ts!!! :embarassed:

I'm a little confused (or maybe its you ) - are you connecting a pressure switch to the stock VDO in your centre console???    - this is a temperature guage 

  there is no reading for oil pressure on a mk1, just an led in the clock cluster that flashes when pressure is low (one of the ones that comes on at start up) and an annoying buzzer that sounds when theres a problem

  Have you checked the sender? they're only a couple of quid and do tend to get a bit tempermental with age.

If you can be bothered you could test it (i'd buy a new one anyway) - remove the sender & connect a bulb tester (possitive to the terminal & negative on the tread) rest it over the spout of a kettle and boil the kettle (you may have to hold the button down for a bit) it should light up the bulb shortly after the kettle boils.  This test works on fan switches too

I'll have a bash at he kettal thing.  The switch is not stock, but a VDO gauge from a VAG car.

The kettle trick only works with temperature guages

Assuming you didn't have gauges to start with, to get the oil pressure gauge to work you need to replace the switch with a sender unit. Instead of on/off, the resistance changes according to pressure changes.

Not yet, looked at a sender at the weekend, more money than I had.  Need to find a second hand sender, if anyone has one kicking about?!?!?
