What does your bonnet insulation look like?
« on: 29 January 2021, 21:50 »
So I had this on my previous Mk5 which I owned for 14 years before my GTi, the under bonnet insulation has a fine white line all around whole the edge, no patches over the expansion bottle or elsewhere but just around the edge, any idea what this is?

Also even though my car is just about 2 years old why has the insulation started drooping from the side nearest the screen? the insulation tabs keep popping out of the bonnet slots.

I was tempted to get a replacement but at about £100 I wanted to wait until I had an idea of what might be causing this.

I’ve not experienced the white line around the edge of the insulation pad on any of the VW’s I’ve owned.

As for the drooping insulation pad; there was a discussion thread on the mk6 forum board a few years back about the same / a similar issue; http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=283919.0

I’ve seen mk7 / mk7.5 owners reporting similar issues on other forums - one suggestion was that the insulation pad may be susceptible to a degree of shrinkage, caused by heat generated in the engine compartment. Here’s a link to a discussion thread over on VWROC.com forum where a few owners have had the shrinking / drooping problem with their under bonnet insulation;

I’m on my third underbonnet heat shield, the first two being replaced under warranty. The car is two years old.
My dealer can’t explain why they seem to shrink/ lose shape.
I’m betting I get a fourth one before the car goes out of warranty.
Bizarre!
This did not happen on my previous Mk7 which I had for two years from new.
Having said all that, those two cars add up to over 4 years of faultless motoring apart from this one quirk.
So I’m still a happy owner.

So by the sounds of there is a good chance that if I ask at the next service in March that it could be replaced under warrantee.

Maybe I need to ask a loaded question....

'Is it normal for a car only two years old to have the insulation droop and become discoloured around the edges?'

If they say 'yes' then I guess it should be easy to look at several out on the lot to compare.

I suggest you follow my example and appear in person at the dealer a few weeks before annual service to flag up a warranty claim on the insulation at the same time as booking the service. You want them to look at it with you so phoning is probably not the best approach. You want them to confirm there and then, or within a few days, that it is a warranty replacement, so they have time to order the part before your service date and get both done in the one visit.
In fairness to Cameron VW in Perth, where I have always had my cars serviced, they were very supportive and got back to me within 24 hrs to commit to a warranty replacement both times.
