Discover Pro Map Update
« on: 31 December 2020, 08:06 »
I did see the other recent thread, which appeared to be related to non-Pro map updates, but it didn't address the issues I'm seeing...

I've got an MY20 Mk7.5 Golf GTI and have already updated the maps once this year (in May?). That time I used the 'DiscoverCare' app on my MacBook and I don't recall any problems. With the current update, I'm not having the same luck...

- DiscoverCare doesn't appear to be working. It identifies an update is available and recognises my 64gb SD card but won't actually download the update (states 'network error')

- I'm able to direct download the 7-zip file from https://app-connect.volkswagen.com/mapupdates/int/en/index.html and extract it to my SD card but the car won't recognise that the card contains an update and fails to install it. I read the instructions from VW which state that Mac OS can cause issues with unzipping 7-zip files, so I've tried using Keka but get the same problem.

At this point I'm out of ideas. The card is the same one used before, is Class 10 and is formatted in FAT32. I've tried both SD slots. Anyone have any other suggestions?

Discovercare is history. Gone. Deceased. An ex-parrot.

The usual problem with the updates is using an archive tool that doesn't support 7zip properly. I had that problem before.

Does seem Keka might be the only option for Mac though - there is no 7zip.

Are you sure the archive doesn't have MIB 1 and MIB 2 folders? I really can't remember if last time it was still doing that... I've just had a look and it asks you, which car, which year range and if its basic nav or pro. So maybe it doesn't.

I'm downloading the file myself to have a look for you - it will take a while - I'll come back later.

Thanks for the reply, the update does download both MIB1 and MIB2 folders, despite specifying that I've got a Discover Pro unit when selecting which packet to download.

While I was waiting for the map pack to download I found this:

https://p7zip.en.softonic.com/mac

That is a proper 7zip for mac, but it is command line only - that page suggests there is a GUI front end for it.

I'm fairly sure its the archiver thats your problem - like I said, I've had that problem before myself when i used WinRar to extract the files - it LOOKED ok but it wasn't. Subtle compatibility issues.

Why VW insist on using a very unusual archive format I don't know. 7zip is better compression but not much over RAR which is much more common. Then again, VW seem to have a strange grasp of software, all the more worrying when the Mk8 is "digital"

I already tried Keka (as recommended by VW in the release notes).

Annoyingly, Skoda have compressed their version of this update as a standard .zip why on earth can't they just be consistent across their brands??

Looks like I'll need to get my hands on a windows PC to get the update.

Ok, so I downloaded the file for you and just as I was about to copy it to the memory stick I use for map updates I think I found the answer.

In the archive there is a folder called P189_N60S5MIBH3_EU_NT

You don't want to extract that to your card!

Go into that folder and extract everything underneath that to the root of your card.

There are two folders: MIB1 and MIB2 and a file called "metainfo2".

That is what you need!

just to be clear, my USB stick (same for SD card) looks like this:

H:\>dir
Volume in drive H is CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9
 Volume Serial Number is EA8D-7C5B

 Directory of H:\

15/10/2015  13:33               904 metainfo2.txt
08/07/2020  17:00    <DIR>          Mib1
08/07/2020  17:18    <DIR>          Mib2

Cheers for the reply. I had been Loading those folders/files to the root directory of my SD card.

I was able to download and decompress the files using a Windows laptop but I get the same error message. Guessing it could be the SD card now? Not sure why as it worked fine for the previous update.

I’ve got a 32gb USB drive I could try but I could only fit the MIB2 folder on to it. Does a MIB2 unit use any files from the MIB1 folder to update itself? Will an update even work from a USB stick?

Yes you can use a USB stick. You also don't need to have it entirely empty, as long as those three things are in the root it will work. My USB stick i used has loads of things as well.

I think you do need both the mib 1 and 2 folders, seem to remember i tried removing the mib 1 folder and it didn't work.

Saga continues.

I’ve got a working map update from the Skoda website (wife’s car is MY20 Kodiaq with Columbus media ie identical to VW Discover Pro). Does anyone know if the Skoda update is identical to VW’s? Ie can I just stick this USB in my GTI to update the maps??
