Hi . My brother is going to pull the trigger on a 67 reg gti from a be dealership it’s a good price and he’s got a deal worked but when asking about service history the sales guys said it’s only had 1 by a independent in September which would make no service for 3 years . The car in question only has 16000 miles and is ex lease and the guy to close the deal said they will give it another service for peace of mind and it comes with the 2year warranty and 2 year mot cover. I’ve said to hold off for now until  we get some advice. Me personally i thinks it’s not good but the car is priced reasonable. Anyone thoughts much appreciated

That’ll be why it’s cheaper. Having said that, the fact it comes with a 2 year warranty for makes up for it although it depends on what the warrant covers, maybe worth checking.

It does seem odd that a lease car has not been serviced at a dealership.

So, you pays your money you makes your choice, for me if the deal is good, it’s from a dealer and comes with a warranty I’d go for it.

I had my GTI as a company car through Leaseplan and they would not let me get it serviced at the main dealer. So it went back in June at 2 years old with 2 services carried out at back street garages, one of which is only known as a tyre garage.

If you’re looking to keep long term, i wouldn’t buy it because it’s a sign that the car may not have been well treated.
If you’re only going to keep for a couple of years, buy it.

He reckons it will be a keeper, so I’m still not sure if he should go for it

It’s a tricky one. It’ll probably be fine, but it’s a clear sign of a neglected car.
Surely there’s plenty on the market?

Theoretically you can go 2 years / ~20k miles before needing a service on the variable servicing regime - so its not 'that' bad.  Not great but not terrible.  Personally if everything else with the car was OK, the price is right, 2 year warranty etc I'd buy it.

If its a keeper he could drop the sump and make sure the strainer etc is all clear.

This ^^. In three years on the long life regime it is entirely possible it needed only the one service. Use your senses, does the car look cared for? Given the service it will get before collection and the two year warranty, if it looks right, goes well, it'll likely be fine.

Look at the tyres too see if they are all premium brands. If they are ditchfinders it looks as if other areas have been scrimped on too. The saving grace is that it has two year warranty and a new service. Is it in a Vw dealers ?
