So a few cumulative things I've done and had fixed in my Mk8 Clubsport after driving it for nearly eight months now and sitting at 14k miles.

Issue: Scraping sound when going round corners of the typical British B-road

Usually anything over 45 MPH with the road surface being uneven. Think it's coming from the wheel area myself and the car's weight shifting.

Does in all modes, Comfort, Sport, Nürburgring. Dealership have heard it now, and tried a number of things: 1. lubricating front suspension components, 2: insulating the exhaust heat shield tunnel from underbody trim, 3: tightening up subframe bolts.

Problem still persists, booked back into dealership in the next couple of weeks with a print out of what Sniffer had done to fix the Squeaking/Creaking noise - thanks @Sniffer.

Issue: Creaking Steering

After about 4 months of ownership, at the end of long journey, typically the commute home when the car was hot.  On pulling into the drive or doing slow parking manoevures.  The car was sounding like it had a bad case of arthritis when turning the steering wheel left or right.  Took a video to show the dealership.  Dealership confirmed clicking and creaking was down to steering rack fault.  Saw @neiln20 had put a post about this, I can join the club.

Fix: Steering rack has been replaced under warranty - not what I was expecting of a new car.  Hoping the replacement one doesn't suffer the same problem later on.

Issue: Poltergeist in Infortainment

On a few occasions I've had random infotainment interaction tones coming through the speaker system when there has been no interaction on my part; my hands have been on the wheel driving.  My fix was pull over, get out the car, lock the car.  Wait 30 seconds, unlock the car.

Turns out these sounds were actually the front reading lights coming on randomly, but as this was happening in the daytime I hadn't noticed.  Dealership confirmed TPI advised this Poltergiest needed to be exorcised with an updated control module

Fix: New, revised control module fitted under warranty

Issue: Pan Roof Wouldn't Close

Didn't think I'd ordered the VW Shower option at purchase.  Had the sunroof fully open whilst going down a dual carriageway.  Started to rain rather heavily, sunroof wouldn't close via the haptic switch.  No messages on dash.  Tried numerous times, got very wet (and grumpy) as did car interior.  Pulled off to see if it was because I was doing 70 MPH and the car needed a slower speed for it to close.  Stationary at the junction it still wouldn't close!

Ended up finding a pub car park, tried a few more time with different fingers, thumbs - no joy.   Fix was get out the car, lock the car with the sunroof open.  Wait 30 seconds, unlock the car.  Then sunroof closed on first try, but of course...

To rub salt in the wound as I went to rejoin the dual carriageway, what was coming the other way but my old Mk6 GTI...couldn't believe it! LOL

Dealership advised that an updated control module was available to fix this non-responsive sunroof issue. Same module that would fix the random reading light on/off issue.

When speaking to the technician about it, apparently after diagnosing my car with this sunroof problem, one hour later another customer (I believe a Mk8 Golf R owner) came in with the same thing.

Fix: New revised control module fitted under warranty. Exorcism of the reading light daemon looks to have been successful too.  Sunroof has opened and closed when asked to, but a smidgeon of me still doesn't trust it. Said to the dealer never had this problem with the sunroof in my Mk4 Golf GTI.

Issue: No Infortainment Audio

On a couple of occasions when I've been at a petrol station, turned the engine off.  As I got out of the car I heard a one second pop/crackle from the speaker system.  Filled the car up, locked it, paid for the fuel.  Came back to the car, unlocked it, selected my user only to find no audio through the speaker system.  My fix was get out the car, lock the car.  Wait 30 seconds, unlock the car.  No messages on dash for this gremlin.

Fix: Dealership applied software update to infortainment - no reoccurence.

Issue: Corroding Front Door Straps

Notice that front black door straps had spots of rust appearing on them.  Didn't expect that from a new car.  Not at this age.  Don't think my Mk6 ones had this problem at all.

Obviously concerned that this would get worse and impact the paint behind the door strap.

To me looks like the factory have been rather cheap on the amount of paint applied.

Fix:  OSF and NSF door straps replaced under warranty.

All the problems apart from the scraping sound have now, fingers crossed , been resolved.  So despite those gremlins, I'm still very much enjoying the car, find the HUD is firmly in my subconscious now.  So much so when they plonked me a courtesy car without it, it felt weird.

If the dealership can just eliminate the scraping sound - granted it's not on every corner, then I'll definitely be more smiles when driving those country roads.

The cornering scraping noise... Its ESC.

In another thread we figured it out.

Find a place where it happens and then drive it again with ESC turned off... No noise.

It's braking a wheel, makes a noise like abs.

Yes, I agree with this, I’m hoping the 8.5 doesn’t do it!

Yeah, I presumed this would be the case, but can always hope!

I've replaced the standard VW centre caps with the Dynamic GTI ones. Will post photos later as the car needs a wash. Managed to prise the original centre caps off without removing the wheel using a very small and thin Flathead screwdriver. You have to do it carefully or you can scratch the wheel.

I've replaced the standard VW centre caps with the Dynamic GTI ones. Will post photos later as the car needs a wash. Managed to prise the original centre caps off without removing the wheel using a very small and thin Flathead screwdriver. You have to do it carefully or you can scratch the wheel.

Aside from the risk of scratching, if they’re diamond cut alloys and the diamond cut finish is around the centre bore, prising out the centre cap does run the risk of damaging the protective lacquer coating around the very edge of the centre bore. If this happens, then white worm corrosion could take hold - initially undetected - as it’d be hidden by the edge of the new replacement centre caps.

Other safe methods to consider for removing centre caps without removing the wheels to push out the existing centre caps from the reverse side are;
  • using a suction puller like the one at the link - https://evaccessories.co.uk/product/centre-cap-removal-tool/
  • if you’re planning on throwing the existing centre caps away, you could either drill a small hole in the face of each one or make a small hole with a tool such as a bradawl (put some masking tape on the centre caps to stop the drill bit / bradawl from slipping). Then insert the hooked end of the VW wheel bolt cover removal tool into the hole and pull the centre caps off.

Not exactly what I've done today, but have just completed a 2,344 drive around France, Belgium, Switzerland and Italy in the last two weeks.  Clubby has behaved imacculately despite needing to go to dealers tomorrow for a service and to resolve the 'gear selector error' which has been showing up for about a month.

Only thing is that it has developed noticeable squeaks when turning at low speeds......something else that the dealer will be asked to look at.
