7.5 GTD fog lights issues
« on: 20 December 2020, 14:57 »
Can anyone advise how to replace the fog light on the passenger side front. The led packed up last week and VW quoted 450 to fit it and over 250 for the part, which seems like daylight robbery. Hoping it's just simple case of unscrewing wheel arch liner to get better access and then locating whatever bolts / screws hold it in place.

I've looked online and can find two different types one is from the 7 and the other the 7.5 can anyone advise the correct part number for a 7.5 passenger side fog light for a UK spec golf GTD estate.

Thanks and happy Christmas 🎄☃️ :nerd:

It’s a sealed unit. Once it’s gone it’s gone. Whole unit needs to be replaced

Looking at pictures of them on ebay, they appear to be fitted by two screws accessed from behind. If it's anything like my T6, the bumper will need removing.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

I’d get it done in dealership.
If they screw it up and things like the radar sensor need recalibration it’s on them.

450 sounds like about two hours work, which it probably is if the bumper has to come off. Not much you can do if that's the case and it's a sealed part. Suck it up i guess  :undecided:

Have a look at this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?app=desktop&v=sitDWqqkHfw

The presenter is removing and reinstalling the foglights on a GTI, the bumper is not coming off from the bits I saw....

Also there are secondhand lights for sale on ebay around £100. That would be my choice, secondhand part and diy.

why would the radar sensor need calibrated? You don't touch the badge to remove the bumper. Even on a 7 the radar isn't touched when you remove the bumper.

I posted on a recent thread about issues with radar.

When my 7.5 was in with VW for a new headlight, they return with the radar not working so it had to go back in for recalibration. So it is completely possible that this can happen.

They have to remove the honeycomb grill above the bumper which covers the radar in order to partially drop the bumper when changing a headlight. They may well have knocked the radar in that instance. For the OP, if he can get behind the bumper from the arch liner there should be no reason why the radar is affected (only the fog light is being disturbed). If it was me, as I said above, I would go for it at £100, some grazed knuckles and a fair bit of swearing compared with the amount VW want to do the job.
