Front tyres need replacing, do rears as well?
« on: 14 December 2020, 14:15 »
My front tyres are at or near the legal limit, and I'll need to get them sorted before the MOT later this month.

The rears are in between 3 and 4 mm. Are these worth swapping as well? I have P Zeros at the moment and was looking to change to PS4Ss. If I change just the fronts, I'm thinking it might be best to stick with Pirellis, which would mean I won't be swapping to Michelins any time soon. Are the Michelins worth swapping all at once? I know there's a 10% off Michelins at Black Circles

If I'm changing them all, I _might_ get new alloys as well. What would you guys choose between 19s and PS4Ss and 18s with PS4s? I have DCC

You don't have to change the rears obviously, but if it was me I'd put 4 new PS4S on. I found them a big improvement over P-Zeros but that was a few years ago and the P-Zeros on my 7.5 are different. Having said that, they feel very similar and I'll be pleased when I do change them. As for 19s vs 18s, purely down to personal preference.

I posted before about whether to get my wheels refurbed, or switch to 18s, and didn't leave with a solid decision. I'm thinking now maybe I shouldn't bother getting the refurb done and just eat the price come PCP end time. That way, just 19" tyres will be the cheaper option. Having said that, the 18 inch PS4 is way cheaper than the 19" PS4S, so if I get a single puncture I might end up wishing I'd downsized and got the new alloys

Is it whiteworm or kerbing damage?

Bit of both. Some WW around kerb damage, some in the middle of the wheel. I put a warranty claim in with VW months ago, but I've given up waiting

How long has your PCP got left to run?

If it's got long enough to get through at least half a set of tyres all round, I'd fit new Michelins to the front wheels, but swap them to the rear. That way you'll wear the P Zeros faster on the front ready for another pair of Michelins to give you the matching set whilst getting all your monies worth from the Pirellis.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

It's got about 18 months left. Might do that you know, not sure.

I guess I'm partly thinking about the winter coming up, and making sure I have as much tread as possible

I'd swap the old ones diagonally to the front and put the Michelins on the back.
That way you will wear the Pirellis out on the front in about 4-5k miles.

My only concern with that is I'm not going to experience the added benefits of having PS4Ss? That is, grip from the front end, everyone says is awesome on PS4Ss on this car.
