GTI Limp mode 4k rpm msg and far too hot (guage)
« on: 19 November 2020, 08:47 »
So my sister called and said just while whe was parking up she got a message that said that the car exceeded 6000rpm and the temp guage went right up, EPC light and Orange triangle on dash. Coolant tank is good. I will be scanning the car later to find out. Ideas?

Hard to say it seems, but a quick google of similar errors on VAG vehicles suggests its basically one or more of the elements which control the combustion cycle having gone crazy. Could be a stuck inlet actuator or could be the fuel pump gone nuts.

Just be glad it didn't happen while it was in gear...

People seem to suggest its usually a transient problem, but does seem to reoccur after clearing down the errors.

Job for the mechanics I think.

Seems strange that the temp gauge shot up as well as the rev warning though?

I can't imagine the two things could happen unrelated?

Are you sure she didn't actually just stick her foot on the pedal accidentally while in neutral then?

Not yet, she is at work, will find out more when I scan it after 16:00 today. I am hoping its nothing bad and just a sensor I assume the water pump is not driven by the chain?

No it didnt rev wildly. She said it did a message and temp guage.

The rev warning is don’t drive it above 4000 like limp mode, I assume it’s water pump/ thermostat that needs replaced.

Ahhh OK, initially you thought it said rev limit exceeded.

The limp mode makes sense.

Water pump problems plague these it seems.

Yeah figured so looks like it’s a fairly hefty bill if you need thermostat housing and water pump. £1k ish from VW
