Quietest tyres - what's quieter than PS4 tyres?
« on: 31 October 2020, 21:48 »
Hi, I think I may have a slow puncture. If I can't get it repaired will have to buy a new tyre (might get 2 for rear to hopefully reduce road noise).  Currently have PS4 tyres and find the road noise way too much when not on smooth surfaces (>50mph). Tyre size is 225/40/18.

What do others find are the quietest tyres, please? I've read loads of articles, and reviews, but would appreciate feedback on those with a golf gti (mine is mk7.5). Dunlop have lowest db rating but realise that is external noise. Others have said cross climate +, but say they hum at motorway speeds.

Many thanks for your help.

I went from Conti Premium Contact 6's on 18's to PS4's on 17's, and the car is a bit louder now despite going down a wheel size, especially on rough tarmac, the steering is also heavier when moving.

So the Conti to my estimations is a little less 'focused' than the PS4's. The car also turns in like a stabbed rat on the PS4's, whereas the Conti's felt a little less pointy.

This is all completely subjective, so obviously get your pinch of salt out.

I've never had sc6 but the sc5's I had lasted about two thirds of the distance of any of the others I fitted to a mk7.x.

On that basis alone I'd give them a miss.

Tyrereviews on YouTube have said no real difference any more between Michelin, Goodyear and Continental for life span. I think the days of conti's wearing faster are long gone.

Thank you all. I don't mind if they wear out quicker as long as they are quieter.

I see that in the evo 2019 tyre test the Conti Premium Contact 6 came top in the road noise/refinement part of the test (3rd overall) and was on same tyres using Golf GTi. Really helpful to get owner's views like yourselves, thanks.

Baka, why did you go down to 17" wheels if you don't mind me asking? I know it's incredibly subjective but did you find the noise levels acceptable on 18" with ContiPC 6 , particularly on concrete surfaces of motorways which are really loud with the PS4's?

Hey NPR, I got injured in a car crash and since then a poor ride can really mess me up. The GTI on big heavy 18's, was just too harsh over speedbumps, ruts and potholes for me; even with the tyres at 33psi.

I try and always buy cars with the smallest wheels for this reason, but the GTI didn't get a 17" option in this country. so I imported some Brooklyn's (basically 17" Austin's) from Germany.

Coming straight from an Audi A4 B7 saloon on 17" AS5's, I found the noise levels comparable, so not bad for a mid size hatch on big wheels. Though the A4 also made a lot of noise on rough roads.

Comparing the Conti's to the PS4's on the GTI, I'd say the PS4's are louder on rough surfaces. Everything about them just seems a bit more focused on performance, I'll be going back to the Conti's I think, mainly for the reduced steering effort.

I find the GTI very well sound deadened at the front, but it seems like they've done sod all in the hatch area as usual. Next summer I plan on treating everything up to the back seats, as this seems to be were the vast majority of the noise is coming from.

Quietest tyres I have on my GTD are Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2. Not a good wear rating but very good grip, good wet performance, not too expensive, and they are 225/40/18.

Dunlops appear to be the only tyre that's quieter but remember that's external noise which has previously been mentioned.

When I got my Mk7 I was of the same opinion as a few others in that I thought it was a noisey car. When I put the Dunlops on that helped alot, now Iam on Sachs coilovers that has been another leap in noise reduction and comfort. The standard setup is just so bad in comparison.

I think a lot has been sacrificed on the altar of lower emmissions...

From tyre design to vehicle weight (sound deadening, panel thickness etc)

And so this is where we are.
