Dealer putting in too much PSI

I went to check my tyre pressures this weekend and was surprised to see they were all 40PSI!

I had an MOT and service at VW main dealer a month ago, so they must have done it then, first time in 15 years a VW dealer has touched my tyre pressures. I'm surprised and angry as 40 PSI is too much, as I drive the car unladen 99% of the time. so I have taken them back down to 36PSI.

Anyone else ever had this?

Having owned motorbikes I check pressures weekly and never had dealer issues. A few times a tyre place has put the wrong PSI in but now I tell them what I want putting in and check afterwards it is correct.

What are the current recommended tyre pressures for a Golf GTI?

Recently, tyre pressure recommendations have shot up across the VAG range. The Polo GTI+ listing are for 41psi fronts and 38 psi backs. In reality, 36psi fronts and 33psi backs is fine.

On my Audi A4 there are 2 recommendations - normal and "comfort" which is around 10% lower, so it seems that Audi recognise that the high setting for max economy may be too high.

Has anyone seen a tread wear pattern that looks classic overinflation on these newer high settings?

Mine were on 40 or thereabouts when I picked it up from the dealership but should be 36 all round.

My book says Standard F36 R39, Loaded F39 R44

I run 36 all round as well.

As per the door sticker it’ll tell you what you should be running. 18’s and 19’s run different pressures, as do the different GTI variants.

Check your door sticker.

Check your door sticker. If you’re on 19’s then those pressures are correct.

Recommended tyre pressures do seem to have jumped significantly over the last 3 years - presumably to squeeze into an emissions bracket. The difference between 40 and 36 psi shouldn't adversely affect tyre wear and comfort differences should be significant. I'd personally stick with 36psi. 40-42psi is very high.

2015 GTI’s with 19’s have 40+psi stickers on their doors. It’s nothing new.

@kmpowell, what does my signature say, 18s, and of course I checked my door sticker, and I know it says 36PSI unladen, you really think I would come on here moaning about the correct PSI, if I didn't KNOW the exact mmanufacturers unladen PSI for my car??? Of course different sizes and variants are different.

Hence I know it is wrong and I am surprised VW have even bothered to do them, and I don't need snide patronising twots telling me to check my door sticker.

If only the VW techs checked door stickers...

They probably give every performance golf an arbitrary 40psi at that dealership.

My 2015 R on Prets ran 36psi on the fronts according to the sticker and tgat felt fine. My 2018 Polo GTI+ had 41psi on the sticker but the ride was horrible (even with 2 stage dampers on the Normal setting). Fine on 36 psi, made a world of difference. Feels like you're driving a BMW on runflats with 41psi.
