mk2 alternator.
« on: 15 October 2005, 19:15 »
Evening all, i am replacing the alternator on mk2 16v Golf ... i have the alternator , it also has power steering.

1 / Am i ok to just replace the alternator tommorrow and wait till my belts arrive on monday morning and then i can just slot the belts on.

2/ Is there anything i need to watch out for when replacing the alt, it seems a simple enough job from looking at it.

3/ Do i need to line anything up with the belts to ensure smooth running ? or can i just put the belts on and thats it...

4/ Can anyone send me the haynes section for the alternator please. brett at aftertheclub.co.uk (replace at with @)

thanks all.

Hi Brett,

1 Yes you can no worries justt leave the bolts loose

2 just remove battery terminals and check pulleys are the same.

3. nope! they all just fit on together

4. sorry can't help on that 1!

Thanks for that, i have started and can see it is all simple enough to take on and off ... what is the process for the belts though ???

i would assume , there is something i can slacken off to get the belts on and then i make the belts tighter but adjusting something and tightening up everything so all is tight.

The alternator moves to allow you to put the belt on it's the top bolt on the arm and you may need to loosen off the bottom 2 bolts a bit to get it to move it'll make sense when you get your spanner out!!!!

There is a bracket underneath the car holding the pas pump in position, just loosen the bolt and push it up towards the engine and the belt will be loose.

On the pump, if you can't get enough slack with just loosing the tension bolt, you have to loosen the pump!

Straight forward enough, there are about 4 bolts i think, but onr you can't see! it on the right if you look at it and is and at the top, there is a gap and the bolt is down the gap, you'll need an extsion piece on your socket to get at it!

Good luck!
