Whether to retain the diamond cut finish or not should also depend on how long you're likely to keep the car - it's my opinion that white worm corrosion on diamond cut alloys is inevitable at 2-3 years old in the UK climate with Winter salted roads etc unless you're swapping out for Winters.

Thank you for the replies guys, I'm a bit of a newbie at it. Felt really stupid catching the alloy and didn't realize how much damage it would do hitting the curb at such a low speed.

It didn't really cross my mind about the tyres, I'll have a look into them if they're a bit dodgy. I guess I was too excited about the car to worry about what brand they are.

I've had a few quotes of around 100-180 to refurb the wheel, to be honest I kinda wanted to get 19" Santiago wheels (because I think they look a bit nicer) in the future and to sell the 18" Austin ones on, but that'll be a bit down the line. Also not sure if the ride will be impacted negatively with larger wheels.

Loving the car so far though!

I'm from the South Wales area near Cardiff, I've emailed and sent photos to several places near me for a quote for a diamond cut. These were the cheapest at £100, but also gave the most generic response! https://www.kerbs.eu/

Hi The quality or comfort of the ride of a car is very subjective. My car came with Santiago 19s  and without DCC I thought it was too harsh and changed to genuine  Milton 18s. On the awful roads we have I prefer the ride and the feel they give, to me, they are more forgiving, less choppy and easier to live with. Others may have no issues with the 19s. If you can, get a good long test run across varied roads/surfaces in a car with a similar suspension set up before deciding.

Definitely very subjective. I always found my R on 19s to be pretty comfy - the tyre is almost as important as the suspension. Getting rid of Bridgestone tyres for almost anything else will add a bit of comfort for those that had Bridgestones from the factory.

I found my Polo GTI+ adequately comfortable on 18" wheels, but since chopping it in for an Audi A4 Avant S-line on 19" wheels, I drove the wife's GTI+ yesterday and found the ride a bit harder than I thought it would be.

It all depends what you're used to. If you're used to hot hatches with large wheels and low profile tyres, you'll probably not mind the ride for a Golf GTI on 18s or 19s.

I managed to catch the other front alloy on the curb last night! If I didn't laugh about it I'd cry 🤣. I think I'll wait a few months to see how I get on before doing anything to the wheels.

I've checked my tyres, all budget and one bridgestone. There's quite a bit of road noise in the cabin so I guess the tyres aren't helping with that.

Are you just skimming them or is it a proper scrape? If it's just a skim, changing those crap tyres out for something with a lip would help. Michelin PS4 have about 8mm lip protecting the rim.

If you've done 2 wheels now, I'd definitely go with powder coating and a tyre change if you've got the readies.
