Hi guys. Still a frequent visitor but not posting much as I’m yet to buy. Moved one step closer this week, but a very odd market out there. Enquired about 6 GTi’s yesterday (very specific in the spec I want), all but 5 “sold in the last 24 hours” back from various dealers.

A result of people not able to buy over lock down I assume? I thought it would be a buyers market and as dead as a dodo....

Dealers not telling the whole truth one way or another (not sure why they would?!).

Anyone else see it differently?

Everything has been on pause so unlike a normal recession there has been no manufacturing, no supply chain and no dealerships, no auctions etc.
What cars there are around are likely to be in demand if they have desirable spec.
Any actual recession and price drops will have a delayed effect once the economy readjusts with furlough schemes and payment holidays ending followed by firms deciding on their ways forward.
I work in transport logistics and can tell you it’s never been so busy as the last few months. It’s been like the Xmas rush turned up several notches as the selfish work from home or furloughed brigade decided they’d expose transport, warehouse and postal service workers to unnecessary risks by ordering anything they liked over the internet and treated it all like a huge government sponsored holiday.
A couple of colleagues of mine are in the market for new houses and it seems the estate agents have seen business go ballistic since restrictions eased with many properties selling within days of hitting the market.
I spoke to a sales lady from my (new build) estate last week in passing and she said they’d been inundated with appointments.
My own experience of the motor trade right now is a very limited amount of bookings for service work and many sales staff still furloughed but office staff gradually returning to work.

I’d say give it a few months to see the real lasting impact of the shutdown. Business seems brisk right now IF you can actually get hold of someone.

I had this exact same issue when looking for a Golf in November/December, a lot of dealers advertising cars that sold in the last 24 hrs. I was also specific on spec (5 door, manual, no tartan etc).

I personally think they were advertising high spec cars that were sold a lot more than 24 hrs ago, just to get interest.

Or advertising cars they never actually had then when a customer enquires they say sorry it’s just sold BUT we have a similar car just arrived today

Oops, forgot to add in my post above.
A couple people I know have approached dealers for car sales and have had auto responses still about the dealerships being shut yet others have been offered unaccompanied test drives so it seems dealer specific.
One acquaintance is trying to buy a BMW and some of the pre-reg’d cars on the BMW website he was interested in are sold, it seems the websites aren’t getting updated as quickly so possibly IT staff working from home with limited access.

Was funny a few weeks ago ringing a breakdown request in for a works lorry and the call handler was trying to fend off his young child so he could take the details down

This same conversation is going on on the motorhome forums. Apparently motorhome dealers are overwhelmed with demand now they are open again and prices are sky rocketing, stories of vans selling at £6k over book price. At the beginning of lockdown I was offered a motorhome that I was interested in at a bargain price but the missus decided it was the wrong layout, so I left it, but within a day of dealers opening it was sold.  I think confidence has returned to the market now, some people haven't been able to spend over lockdown and have money now to spend.

We've just bought a new Karoq, we got a great deal at the end of May whilst showrooms were closed, not sure how hard they will try now if the market is picking up, but the "headline" deal for PCP's is good if that's your thing....

You enquired about 6, and all but 5 were sold? So, one was sold?

Seems that the things people are buying with their disposable income have been fetching silly money lately.

I do like the super detailed "Ultimate Collector Series" of Lego Star Wars sets, and subsidise my hobby by doing a bit of buying stuff in the sales that should prove popular after retirement, and then making a profit down the line. Some of the sets I had in the "for sale" stash has almost doubled in price during lockdown, so I got most of my stash sold.

Similarly with pets. We've been wanting a dog for ages, but held off until our elderly house rabbit died of old age. Prices of pretty much all breeds has doubled and if you don't answer an ad within 30 mins of posting on the likes of pets4homes, you won't get called back because there'll be dozens of respondants.

NonKC/KC Labs were going for £700/1000 before lockdown. Try getting one for less than £1800 now.

The UK population have been in the main sat at home, bored, with a hole burning in their pocket as their leisure spends have dropped off to nothing.

Might be worth waiting until everyone has been back at work for 3 months to see car prices settle down and the flow of used metal to start moving again as people chop in their used Golf GTI MK7s for BMW135 as the MK8 is so ugly!
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
MK7 R 5 door, manual, Lapiz Blue, Prets.

Wow, that’s some great feedback everyone, thank you (only one pointing out my deliberate mistake - 5 of the 6 I enquired about were sold  ).

It really does highlight that the economy is in a real unstable position right now. Strange times indeed!

I just don’t know whether to hold off and bide my time or snap something up as soon as I see something. I’ll let you guys know, as only I can make that decision
