Rust
« on: 01 May 2020, 10:01 »
Apologies if this has been raised before. I've got an ex demo 8 month old TCR and rust has formed on the silver rotors? between the wheels and discs, only on the rears though? The front ones are fine. It's probably been there since I bought it in January, but only recently noticed it.

Not sure how to enclose pictures. Surely that's not right? Once lockdown is over, and I can get it booked in, that must be a warranty issue? Your advice/comments would be appreciated.

A standard feature that I think. The hubs on mine have rusted and its never been near any harsh chemicals at the hand wash.

Rusty rear hubs is something every Mk7 has.

Some people strip it down and hammerite them.

Most don't have that level of OCD.

@funboxster; very common, as you’ll see if you do a Google search on ‘vw golf rusty wheel hubs’. Other manufacturers vehicles also suffer from this.

I’d be surprised if VW or the dealer would consider this to be a warranty issue, so if it concerns you, rub down the affected area(s) with wet and dry abrasive paper to remove the corrosion, dry them thoroughly, then paint with Hammerite or a paint that’s resistant to high temperatures. Mask up any areas you don’t want to get the paint on.

Thanks all for your input. I suspect VW would label it as cosmetic. I'm surprised that it occurs, but c'est la vie.

mine were rusty as hell on the R and GTD - common problem. Hasn't happened on the Polo GTI's discs though, front or back. Different disc manufacturers with different standards on what is acceptable in use I suppose.

My 2015 discs were showing just a few signs of rust on them when I sold it this year. My 2019 car when I bought it was far worse already after less than 2k miles.

At least you'll not have to worry about the fronts corroding as well on the TCR

Popped out to check mine, and they are fine. No rust or corrosion on the hubs after nearly 12k miles.

I checked the receipt from when I had my car protected by my detailer (at new) and it says he specifically used on the hubs some ACF50 spray (which is anti-rust) followed by a ceramic coat, so that problem explains if the rusty hubs are a common issue why mine are ok.

There was/is a big thing about this very issue on the TT Forum a couple of years ago, so this isn't exclusive to the Golf...
