Racechip do some good options. All the tuning boxes are traceable though so worth bearing in mind in you are worried about the warranty.

How can a tuning box be traceable if it is removed? It physically will not be there.

My understanding from various posts on here is that it leaves a marker on the ECU.

Tuning boxes can cause issues like over boost errors that remain logged in the ecu. That's what happened on my 2013 gtd that had a god awful dtuk box on. I was able to clear the faults but they remain in the history even after clearing.

How long until you are out of warranty?  A remap is better than running with a tuning box, so if you only have a year or so left it could be worth the wait.

Yes, the tuning box will leave plenty of markers that a deep scan by VW will find easily enough, they know what they’re looking for.

That’s a good suggestion and one I’d agree with.
So long as the car is healthy, well serviced and not driven like a loon regularly then the likelihood of major engine failure is fairly low on a tried and well tested unit.

My question to the OP is why you want the extra power?
Is it for extra mid range ooomph, is it for top end performance or is it because you find the car a bit lacking?

Depending on your driving style the first thing I would recommend is a pedal box to see if that wakes the missing feeling of responsiveness up that many of us find lacking with the standard car.

The GTI does benefit hugely from a remap or tuning box. I’ve had at least one remapped/boxed example of every generation of GTI since VW first started strapping turbos on them over 20 years ago. Nobody appreciates the extra mid range urge and willingness to rev more than I do.
However if your driving style involves a lot of running up to the red line then I’d strongly recommend you looking at a car such as the R or TCR as a better long term base for tuning. It’s a stronger engine and the turbo has masses of headroom unlike the standard GTI turbo which runs out of puff at lowish revs.

My personal driving style is that of a boring old fart and I do actually much prefer a tuned 300 PS small turbo GTI engine over a standard 300PS R engine because of the massive low rev shove of the small turbo. I rarely use high revs, but someone else will be the opposite (most sporty car drivers probably!) so I’m merely offering a view from years of my own expensive experiences.

Hi all I do find lacking compared to my previous focus st which was remapped via bluefin remap which never caused a problem with ford. Just like the idea  of being able to remove so its not obvious if need be. Racechip one offers a 1 / 2 year warranty for the engine. What difference does the pedal box do?

If you are manual rather than DSG this could also be an option.  A version for DSG is also in the pipeline.
https://www.mountune52.com/collections/mk7-5-golf-gti/products/m52-golf-gti-stage-1-power-upgrade-mk7-5-only.  If you follow them on Facebook / Instagram they regularly do discount codes of at least 10% but up to 20%.

It's a remap rather than a tuning box, but you flash it yourself via the OBD port and can 'return to stock'.  I say that in inverted commas as I'm sure it will leave a TD1 flag should VW ever look at the engine for warranty purposes.

I'm running the Mk7 version of the tune with TCU remap.  My first remap but I've been quite impressed with it once it settled after a few hundred miles.

I'd check those warranty terms carefully. If you put a "warrantied" box on, VW will refuse pretty much any drivetrain warranty if they detect the box with a "guilty until proven innocent" attitude. A lot of the box warranties state that if you can prove that the box caused the fault, they'll pay out. So neither party will pay out as VW make you prove the fault woukd've happened anyway and the tuning box company make you prove direct cause. Only a reputable (and expensive) independent engineering inspection report is going to stand up in court.

Unfortunately VWs aren't infallible. I've had 10 new VWs and 2 of them needed a new turbo within warranty and one had a slipping clutch in cold temps - all on stock power. Wouldn't have liked the bill for any of those repairs.

Usually the big VW fails are under warranty, but for me, the TDI tech is much more robust than TSI tech.

I'm looking to remap or box my Polo GTI+ when it's out of warranty, I don't think I'd risk it within warranty, and even then I won't go silly, maybe 20-25% above stock.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
