Handling Upgrade Options
« on: 25 April 2020, 10:21 »
All this recent warm weather has got me thinking about treating the GTI to some handling upgrades but I'm not sure which route to take.

The aim is to keep stock levels of comfort when driving normally but on the rare occasions I choose the 'scenic route' home I'd like it to make things a little sharper. On previous cars I've been able to get lift off oversteer and it'd be nice to have that in the GTI without ruining the overall refinement.

I would really like the Racingline carbon fibre rear brace but I can't find many reviews on it - it looks fantastic aesthetically but does it do much? I was thinking of maybe pairing that up with either the Clubsport S RARB or one of the less aggressive aftermarket choices.

I know I could go straight in and get a 25/26mm RARB and I'd have lift off oversteer but I think something so aggressive would upset the balance and it would annoy me everytime I drive over bumpy roads.

Please help

I’m also looking to upgrade a few bits but it depends on the mileage of the car, perhaps super pro bushes for your LCAs and a super pro RARB which is solid and only slightly thicker than stock. The CSS RARB is around 20% stiffer which would be difficult to notice, the main upgrade on the CSS is the front end set up.

The cars are well suspended as standard but some CS springs could work well.

I am tempted with the following upgrades for my CS.

Super pro LCAs which add castor and camber and their RARB too with some subframe securing bolts.
2026 Golf GTI ED50 ???
2025 Audi RS3 Vorsprung
2023 MK8 Golf R - sold
2021 MK8 Clubsport ED45 - sold
2016 MK7 Clubsport ED40 - still hanging around
2013 MK7 GTI Black 5 Door (Non PP)
Long gone -1984 Helios Blue Campaign MK1 GTI

Superpro front control arms and wind all the camber and toe-in off the rears. Maybe some fancy MSS adjustable ride too if you're feeling like it.

Hey presto, it's like a fat 205 GTI and doesn't ride like a smacked arse.

The main reason a rear sway bar was suggested was simply that I've seen them advertised as a stage 1 upgrade for the suspension and the best value for money suspension upgrade you can do which appeals to me, especially being tight-fisted Yorkshireman.

You're a non-PP??

To be fair, even changing the geo will have a positive effect for little money. They're very "safe" out of the box.

I have a full SUPERPRO poly bushes rear end that’s just been powder coated and looks like new if anyone is interested? Lower arms, camber and toe arms. Six in total. That with a CSS rear ARB and that would tighten the rear end up no end. Simple bolt off bolt on mods.

PM me if interested.
