Yeah you won't get a dealer retrofitting OEM equipment.

I am not even sure how the guys who do this manage it because I thought it required VW factory activation authorisation...

Thanks to everyone who took the time to read my question and especially to those who had suggestions to offer.
So from the top:
fredgroves - I had thought that in a previous question on this site it had been said that these kits were for lefthand drive only so thanks for correcting that for me. Sadly the car still has 30 months warranty on it and the dealer has said that many bits of the warranty will be invalidated if I let another company fit kit so I'm afraid that's out (at least until it's 3 yrs old that is!).
Dubber36 - thanks but that is the exact modle I bought from Amazon only to find that the holding clip goes between the existing mirror casing and the glass, and the gap is too tight - if the door mirror is adjusted when this is in place it looks as if it will break.
Catnapper - I didn't know about those. I'll give them a go.
jim_mk7.5 - Yes! I'm liking those!!

I wouldn't bother with them, they won't do retrofits. Most won't anyway.

I might try them anyway as they did the rear camera retrofit on mine as have the receipt from the dealers.

BMW are always happy to take our money and retrofit stuff lol

It's dealer dependant it seems. Aberdeen VW will do retrofits but my local dealer won't.

Yeah will try a couple and see.

I do find it strange some do and some don't, if the manufacturer offers a retrofit kit, then all the dealers have availability to supply and fit it as there are usually internal fitting documents etc available to the dealers and it would be another income generator in that sense for the dealers. Plus retrofits are usually covered under the warranty too then.

When I had my rear camera retrofitted I was told it comes with a VW 2 years parts and labour warranty. I like the idea of this retrofit, especially if the mirrors are black against my pure white body.

I used Milenco towing mirrors on my B7 Passat. The gap between the glass and the casing was pretty tight, but if you tilt the glass down to fit the extra mirror, then adjust the glass back up, it will fit. It's bloody tight and sometimes did rub, but there's nothing that will break. If you need to adjust the glass up and it won't go, just ease the casing away a bit and it will go.

In theory, you should only need to fit them and adjust the glass once. It's not like towing mirrors that were on and off all the time.
Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

Well I did call up my local dealer (will try another one too) and got the response, they don't do this as a retrofit and it's not offered. I did mention that their are companies offering it as a retrofit and it appears to use genuine parts etc, and he told me they must be getting parts from scraped cars and creating their own retrofit
