Tyre preferences (UK) - GTI Performance Mk7.5
« on: 19 February 2020, 13:04 »
My GTI Performance came with the last Pirelli P Zero tyre in 225/35 R19 Y (88) size/spec (on Santiago wheels)… They seem decent enough to me, and have certainly performed well enough (big kudos for surviving a couple of pothole strikes) but, also, they don’t seem particularly special in any way (maybe that’s being harsh)… They are miles better than the “run on flats” that my last BMW had, however…

Anyway, I know this sort of thing is very subjective, but I was just wondering what were folk’s thoughts on the (many) alternative tyres out there for the Mk7/7.5…

Has anybody (for instance) tried the new version of the P Zero or the Michelin Pilot Sport 4…?  How about other alternatives..?

PS4S's if you are on 19's. PS4's for 18's (no S version for a 18 size)

Really really good tyres for UK roads and weather (obviously all bar the use of proper winter tyres when its actually proper winter - something thats a few weeks a year unless you are in Scotland)

Plenty of other options are ok, none as good IMHO.
Current: Mk8 GTI DSG, Adelaides, DCC, HUD, HK, Winter Pack, Rear Camera.. Aka "HMS Weasel"

Gone: 2017 Mk7.5 GTD,manual, NavPro
Gone: 2014 Mk7 GTD, manual, NavPro, DCC

The 18" PS4 isn't as good as the 19"PS4s. I hate the soft feeling they give the car. Goodyear Asy 5s and also Conti premium 6s are alternatives too.

Another one for Michelin PS4S's on 19's. I've run the previous Super Sports on 18's and they have been superb too but not tried the PS4's in 18's. Also the F1 Asymmetric's are again another good option.

Personally not been a fan of the Pirelli tyres in any form, from the ones I have run.

Seems like the Michelin definitely has a lot of support.. not just on here, but in the wider car community... and it will certainly be on my list when it comes time to change...

Will be interested, though, to see what folk think of the new P Zero now that it's out...

Being the sort of user who can stay at home in the worst conditions, and not living in a part of the country that suffers tremendously in winter, I have only ever felt the need to run one of my cars on winter tyres and that was because, in summer, it was running on Cup tyres...

We've had a really mild winter so far (I know, tempting fate) and I never really felt the Pirelli's I have on struggling through the cold...

I haven't experienced Michelin PS4S, but have experienced the PS4 onmy current Polo GTI+ and PSS. on my old R, i'd pick PSS over PS4 in hindsight next time I need tyres, they're a little better in everyway (quieter, trippier, more flexible for ride comfort), with the possible exception of wear rate.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

I went directly from well worn OEM Conti 5’s (noisy, gripped ok, lasted ok) to PS4S and now on OEM Pirellis due to a change of car, all in 235/35 19” on GTI variants.
The Pirellis are ok but unremarkable. It’s been a rainy and mild winter so wet grip has been well tested. I’ve not had any issues with that.
The Michelins were quieter, grippy, rode ok and are quite good value with Michelin £100 cashback promos.

Many people who know about such subjects say the PS4S are the best thing since sliced bread and I’ll sway along with that view. When the P-Zeros are worn I’ll be favouring a return to the Michelins unless convinced something else is better by then, and that’ll take some doing.

In 19" the PS4S is the best version if you look at somewhere like Tyrereviews. It's not really a direct comparison between it and the PS4 on 18". I wouldn't buy 18" PS4 again but that's just me 😀

Well depending how close you boys are to me in Wolverhampton, as I'm currently sat on the BBS SR 18's, my 19" OZ, with PS4S's are just sat in the garage so you can happily do a quick change over and go for a little spin to try them out
