Low Coolant Level - 19 Plate GTD DSG
« on: 11 February 2020, 09:49 »
hi All,

so on driving off from home today - low level coolant red warning light came up on Display, so stopped and checked tank, it still had some left in it and didn't appear critically low, however returned home as had only travelled to the end of street and topped up to minimum level as had some VW ready mix at home.   Car is almost 9 months old 8k miles on clock.  No noticeable leaks anywhere.

I did have a similar issue on my last GTD (66 plate MK7) but no dash warning, just noticed coolant was low after a year and simply topped it up and had no further issues until I gave car back in June 2019.

Weather has been very cold last few days and very windy!!  Maybe the wind blew it away
Will keep an eye on it over the next few days

Mine has b!tched about it a couple of mornings in the last couple of days.

I expect its down to on the borderline low level and a little thermal contraction knocks it over.

I moved my car to let the wife out, the warning appeared but 30 mins later when I started it up to leave myself, the warning was gone.

I'll be chucking in a bit of extra coolant this morning - one of the things on my job list today.

Mk7.x's do suffer from water pump housing leaks, but this is a long slow leak - mine is almost 3 years old and has 60k on it. This is the first time I'm seeing this, but my last GTD had the same - one top up and it was good after that. Possibly a service tops it up as well though.

I remember a few of these with GTDs - one top up required early on and then OK. One theory was that an air pocket in the system takes a few hundred miles of real world running to clear. Just monitor, now you’ve topped up.

...but definitely keep an eye on it as there has been more than a few water pumps/thermostat housings that have failed. Should be sorted under warranty if it is though.

Why only top up to minimum level? Top to maximum level and keep an eye on it.
