Help please guys...mk2 golf buying

Hi everyone, i really fancy getting a mk2 golf for my next car...things is i've been driving a new astra for the past year and a bit. Is it gonna be difficult to be driving a 10 year old car with no ps every day?

Ideally i would like a big bumper one...are these just the gti's? if i can get insured on a gti for around 1500quid then i'll go for one of those but what other models are there? I heard that late model mk2 golf's had power assissted steering...is this right?

Plans are to go for a black 3dr, set of bbs rims (prob 16's) lower it, exhaust, grille and single wiper conv. Incidently what are the standard seats like? Can someone also recommend how low and what kit to go for, also which exhaust fits best etc.

Right first off if your after a decent one at a low price then your after a long search as i'm finding out  

Try Direct line and HIC for the insurance.You sound like you have a few good plans for it.Have you considered the 8V though? Both equally good cars.

A good purchase would be a Fault finder from Gunson LTD for about ?18.It's acts like the Tech 2 from Vaux but a little less sophistcated.An LED flashes to indicate faults with the car and just just read the book it comes with and it tells you the fault to the number of flashes! Good eh  

As i said the good 16V's are rare now but there will be a few 8V's to choose from.You will find PAS was an option till 1990 i think.FSH is a must as most will be over 100K but don't let the milage put you off as they go forever.

Cheers for the info...i'm gonna start looking for one now, will be about 4weeks before i see any money from the insurance company anyways. I can imagine insurance being a b!tch...the astra was grp 5 and with all mods etc it was 1100 which aint bad to be fair. What group is the 8v?

8v is group 14 and the 16v is group 16

I'm on here because i'm selling my Astra to get out of debt and buying a Golf GTI!

Yeah insurance is a b!tch on the GTI! I've got the 8V down to ?857 but the 16V is ?997!!

A CAT 1 is a must though and will bring it down a bit.
