Advise please
« on: 08 February 2020, 15:56 »
Can I ask some advice please, my sons got his heart set on a gti performance, weve looked at one today which seems good, full dealer history etc and for sale through das welt auto. Is their warranty etc worth more than some of the extras like sat nav. I was expecting sat nav to be part of the spec but it seems not. The car has nothing apart from the performance pack.  We are torn between getting one with loads of stuff like sunroof and toys or buying from das welt at a higher price but with all the security that offers. So wondering if things like sat nav could be added to it once we get it

Thanks to anyone with sage advice

You don't say how old the car is, so assume older than 3 years, and warranty offered with the car 1 or 2 years?

I'm sure there will be others out there with sunroof, which helps lighten up the cabin and DCC for a softer ride, if required.
Personally, I would go for a car with extras that you will find useful, and at some stage, will make it more saleable later on. I think sat nav is a given these days, but you may be able to retrofit a head unit. More knowledgeable people than I can advise.

Hope that helps.

You can retrofit OEM VW nav units, but they aren't cheap. In fact eye watering is nearer the mark.

There is/was an Alpine third party nav unit, VW dealers themselves even sold/fitted them but they aren't great - its very retro even compared to the VW one which is pretty retro I think anyway. The Alpine ones needed another additional antennae wire to pick up RDS traffic data that often seemingly didn't work.

Personally, if you are without a car mounted Nav unit, either buy a standalone satnav (Garmin, TomTom etc) or use your phone.

I'm assuming that a GTI-PP without Nav is quite an old one - from about 2016 they all came with basic nav AFAIK.

You can retro fit mib 2 units for about 1k. Try VW Retrofits on Facebook. He seems to be the goto guy.

Week 22 2015 (end of May) was the point nav became standard in the UK. It was also the point the MIB2 units were introduced, which had a bigger screen and better processor than the earlier MIB1 units.

As Fred says, retrofitting a genuine VW unit ain't cheap, as the extra cost would have stretched your budget and could have got you a better/newer car.

There's some info on das welt here;-

I've heard mixed reports about how good the warranty is, but at least any warranty is better than no warranty.

Oh, and avoid their finance. 10.9% APR is ridiculous.

You can retro fit mib 2 units for about 1k.

As I said... eye watering just to get Nav!

And does that even give you the MFD integration?

Yes everything works correctly. To replace a nav unit from VW will cost upwards of 3 grand so retro fitting at 1 thousand is much cheaper. I agree it's expensive but if you want to do it it's possible.

Car is 2015, we looked at one with colour reversing camera, sat nav and dynaudio but it was in bad state both upholstery and engine so passed by. I knew the camera and audio were extras but presumed the nav was standard.
It's not viable to fit it at those sort of costs so will go without!

Personally speaking I went private and made sure I got one with all the options I wanted and more. It’s much easier to find a private car with all the options and haggle it down and then add the VW warranty afterwards.

If you can find one at the dealers with the options then even better.

As others have said a lot of things can be retrofitted but it’s all at cost so you have to weigh it up.

I agree the 10.9% APR is ridiculous but check if the offer is still on that I got buying a das welt!

Depending on your circumstances but I was a cash buyer and was persuaded to put the minimum (£1500) on VWFS and they then included 3 free services! I was told after 6 months I can pay off the finance and keep the services but even if you don't pay off you'll still be in front!! (FYI - just paid mine off!)
