Reversing Camera Help Please (67 plate GTI PP DSG)
« on: 05 February 2020, 12:31 »
Hi Folks.

Hoping you can help with an odd situation.

I have a 67 plate Golf GTI DSG (Digital Dash).

When its foggy (not often I know) & I have the front & rear fog lights on, when I pull up & go into reverse the guidance lines from the reversing camera show on the centre screen but no image.

If I switch off the fog lights the "normal" image returns. If I put the fog lights back on the normal image stays as it should.

Local VW Dealer has had it in & said they cant find any faults & that VW "think" its the way it should be & that the flare from the lights is making the camera not able to function!

I argued that if that was the case when I put the fog lights back on it would have the same so called flare & the camera image should blank out & it doesn't. They agreed that it was odd & to leave it with them to discuss with VW Technical Team.

If there is anyone out there with the same year & spec GTI could you please spare a couple of minutes to stick on your fog lights, drive for a minute or two, pull up & stick it in reverse & please tell me if your reversing camera does the same as mine.

I have put this on another forum & got nothing but sarcasm & abusive replies so hoping someone will be kind enough to help me here.

Just to be clear I do not drive around with my fog lights on all the time only when its foggy or thick mist.

Thank you in advance.

Just tried mine, sunny day, not foggy, but putting on the foglights doesn’t have any effect on my camera view. The conditions you describe sound like exactly those when a camera would be desirable, so I can’t see this being how it should be. If it’s any help, my camera certainly doesn’t go blank when another car is behind with headlights on. The “flare” from that must be loads worse.

I’d say this is definitely not a case of “They all do that sir”!

Cheers Talk-torque. That's appreciated mate.

What year is yours?

Funnily enough the Dealer rang me half an hour ago & started asking about the Thinkware Dashcam I have hardwired.
I have a feeling that the next conversation I have with them will be along the lines that its the Dashcam that's causing the issue & they will just use that as an excuse to dip out of sorting it.

Thanks again.

So you have the highline camera, (the one with the bendy lines) i myself would program it up like the lowline (vcds or obdeleven) and see if it comes on with fog,

Don't think they fit highline cameras from the factory on 7s or 7.5s.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.

Yes. The guidelines bend when I turn the steering wheel to show where I'm going to be going. 👍

My 17 plate GTI DSG does exactly the same thing and I think switching the rear fog off and back on again whilst the camera is engaged just fools it because my screen goes blank again after about 10 seconds.
VW dealer said it was normal but could not offer any explanation why it would be that way though

Cheers Zan. That's really surprised me mate. So either we both have the same issue/problem or its looking like it is just the way it is eh.

Do you have a Dashcam hardwired in or anything?
