Poll: Does the mk7(& 7.5) look dated?
« on: 15 January 2020, 18:58 »
It seems to be the season of random polls so...

I was reading something a few days ago regarding a person asking opinions of people who’d moved from a Golf R to an AMG A35.
The opinions were surprisingly mixed considering the amount of time the Golf has been on sale and still seems very highly regarded (with opinions on the mk8 drawing the most criticism).

Golf owners are notoriously conservative so, as a quick poll, has the mk7(7.5) aged well compared to its newer rivals or has it passed the sell by date?
No bias on here I’m sure.

On my third Mk7, but love this one even more than the others. Classic design IMO.

I still think the Mk7.5 is a great looking car. Is it showing it’s age? Yes, of course it is. Design is moving on constantly and the interior is an area that perhaps is looking a bit older compared to some 2019 released models. Does that make it less desirable? Perhaps so, to some people.

But it doesn’t stop the Mk7.5 models still being some of the best hot hatches available to buy and evo seem to agree. Not one but two in their current 10 top. Plus the Up! GTI.

I'd agree with this. The design is getting old but still looks a great car. The MK8 to me is starting off poor, not sure it'll be a grower either. Still considering my TCR options, it might happen and if it does it will likely be a ten or so years keeper...

My Mk7.5 did seem quite dated inside after getting out of my M135i test drive....

But I don't think its ever felt like Concorde's cockpit, not even when I got in the Mk7 for the first time 6 years ago.

I would say the Mark 7.5 looks a bit dated on the inside but sometimes 'progress' isn't always better. I'm not keen on the way interiors are going eg A Class, 1 Series and seemingly the Golf 8. All open plan, few buttons and all 'touch and go'. I like to be cocooned a bit and 7.5 certainly hits the mark there. With the digital dash, it is still modern-ish.

If you want an example of a dated cockpit, look at the V40 which has only just gone out of production.

Having just sold my early 2009 Scirocco with its red MFD, the interior for me is anything but dated.

The overall Golf design is timeless and classic, some of the more funky designs only have a
limited shelf life in respect to passing time.

Actually still prefer the MK7 to any other Golf MK and the subtle details on the bodywork shows allot of thought went into it's design. IMO it is even better than the 7.5 as I hate the headlights looking like an Audi TT copy.

You prefer the front bumper looking like an Audi R8 copy instead?!

I think the mk7 (pre facelift) has by far the purest design myself. The GTI/D has a real elegance to the shape when viewed from most angles.
The pre-facelift R also had a very distinctive identity and stood apart from the rest of the range.
I see nice examples of both every day and always admire how they look which isn’t bad after seven or so years.

I really like the more aggressive front end of the 7.5 GTI too but it lacks the elegance of the earlier edition.

I mostly dislike the front of the non-performance 7.5 models except perhaps the R-Line.

dated or Classic?? The only thing that dates the cabin is the screen tech that you get in new models, although tape an ipad on your dash & bobs your uncle!!
