Watching those clips the engine isn't under any load at all, just like reving in neutral.
It does sound like 6th isn't being selected at all.

Yes. Watched them a few times and, together with scottio’s description of what happens, I’d agree that 6th is not being selected. Points to a linkage problem, either inside or outside of the gearbox. You need someone to look at it who will spend the time to do a proper diagnosis, before taking stuff apart. As the saying goes, it’s not rocket science! So far you have been very badly advised and, frankly, taken to the cleaners for unnecessary work. From here, you need to get the thing fixed, before selling. The going rate for a car with an undiagnosed missing 6th gear will be horrendous!

Yeah they do all the contract work for Police Scotland and a few other councils in Scotland. I don't think I can afford to get the gearbox taken out again because its over a grand in labour ect.

I've hit a brick wall with it and I'll probably have to take the hit on it at trade. I called VW again today but no call back as yet and doubt I'll get one.

If you’re near Glasgow I can have it looked at but whoever charged over a grand in labour to remove and refit the box was taking the piss

Cheers. I live in Motherwell so not far

When he took it out he replaced linkages and both 5th and 6th gears plus the new clutch so the invoice says.

So the garage knew what the problem was, did all that work and returned it with the fault exactly as it was? Did they admit it wasn't fixed or leave you to find out? Did they say they found something broken? It sounds suspiciously like they have just changed parts on the off chance they would solve the problem rather than fix the problem. If that is the case I really think you need to get the car in to a specialist for a proper diagnosis. I realise there's been a big bill already but it'll be nothing compared with the loss if the car is sold as is.

What WATTS said.
If they did all the work and gave it back in the same condition, that's horrendous.
They should be either fixing it (although i wouldn't let them near it if it was me) or contributing / paying someone who knows what their doing to sort it.

Well if you dropped your car off at them to fix and it’s not done why have they charged you

When I sold my previous car to webuyanycar.com they just started it up, moved it a foot forward and a foot backward and then turned it off.
