What happens if you put in 6th and let the clutch up with no power.
Do the revs drop to idle, or match road speed.
Is there any engine braking etc.
The video just looks like either no gear engaged at all or badly slipping clutch.
However if slipping like that i would expect it to do so in other gears.
I cant understand how that can be anything but mechanical.

If I put it into 6th and apply no acceleration it doesn't high rev, it goes into gear but as soon as you try to keep the speed up and apply power it revs out like the video.

I had a genuine clutch put it when the gearbox was out. It doesn't seem to be the clutch since it done this on the old clutch too (which was fine when they took it out). All other gears work fine with no issues.

Not sure where to go from here, might just have to trade it in and take the hit.

If you take up to 70mph in 5th and then put in 6th and coast, are the revs at idle or do they match to the road speed and reduce with road speed.

It just drops speed as any pressure on accelerator it high revs.

I've not had it mapped but no idea if the owner before me had it done.

But doesn't drop straight to zero revs?

That its 6th gear specific really has to sound like the linkage doesn't it? That's the only thing I can think of.

I too can't see how this can be anything other than a mechanical issue. OP - has the gearbox been removed and examined internally? Have a watch of this video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Mchpzh7NiQ  Albeit an earlier transmission, I doubt they have changed much, at 1m25s they state that the shift forks can break, this could be the most cause of the problems you describe.

Yes gear box was taken out and inspected with no issues found but replaced 5th and 6th gear and lineages to see if they were the cause and also new clutch put in to rule that out.

Like people are saying I don't think it can be anything other than mechanical but told everything is in perfect working order on that side. Can't see how it could be anything else

That's really odd, do you have full confidence in the garage that stripped the gearbox? It might be worth speaking to these people - http://www.inde-tech.co.uk/ . They rebuilt my Audi's gearbox a few years ago and get excellent reviews. I appreciate they may not be conveniently located but they may be able to advise you and if convinced, it might be worth a trip down to them or get someone reputable but more local to check what they suggest. Must be incredibly frustrating for you.

Yeah they do all the contract work for Police Scotland and a few other councils in Scotland. I don't think I can afford to get the gearbox taken out again because its over a grand in labour ect.

I've hit a brick wall with it and I'll probably have to take the hit on it at trade. I called VW again today but no call back as yet and doubt I'll get one.
