MK 7 PP GTI - 6th gear issue
« on: 31 December 2019, 11:16 »
Hi All,

I have a 2016 manual PP GTI which has done around 15K.

A couple of months back my car stopped engaging in 6th gear (no power when accelerating and just high revs) It was 2 months out of Warranty and after checking various things I ended up getting the gearbox checked, changed 5th and 6th and the clutch although from inspection there was not very much they could see wrong. I still have the 6th gear issue but no one can say why. All other gears working fine.

Spend nearly 2k checking this out been to VW, independent dealers and a transmition specialist who thinks it must be electrical since everything else looks good.

Cant really afford to pump more money into it so before I have to trade it I was wondering if anyone else has ever heard or seen of similar.

Cheers

Can't help with any experience of your specific issue. But i'd be having a right old moan to VW about it. A car that's so recently outside warranty shouldn't be suffering an issue like that. Especially given its low mileage, unless it has been abused or neglected in some way

Good luck getting it sorted, i don't think it'd be unreasonable to expect some good will from VW towards the cost.

No just a standard 3 year warranty.

I have written to VW and called but was told it was outside the warranty.

I bought it from Evans hallshaw so not a VW dealer.

I love the car but its just costing big money to find the issue I don't really want to sell but I don't want to risk this issue getting any worse

This is a pretty horrific story. You’ve been treated rather badly by the people who have worked on the car up to now. Starting from where you are, after the work already done on the car, you can, assuming the work to have been done correctly, discount the gearbox itself and the clutch. How this could be an electrical fault I cannot imagine! That leaves the gear selector linkage, which could be out of adjustment. What does the gearstick feel like, when you attempt to select 6th gear?

How long have you had the car and what sort of warranty did you get with it? You would have been better advised to take this problem straight to VW when it first occurred, as it shouldn’t have happened with such a low mileage car. Assuming that you have had it serviced properly, they would probably have been sympathetic. As it is, a lot of things have been done to the car which muddy the water.

It was fine for the first 5 months I had it so I don't think this was a previous issue as would have just been fixed under the standard warranty.

It goes into 6th fine there is no crunching or sticking and all linkegages have been checked twice before the actual gearbox was worked on. It just doesn't seem to engage any power and just revs and goes down the gears on the central console once you try to drive it in 6th. There is also a burning electric kind of smell I've had a few times when the air con is on but I don't see anything obvious.

It had a full VW service history and one previous owner although who knows what was done then.

I looked online for weeks to see anything like it on the forums but doesn't seem to be something that anyone has had that I can see, just really unlucky I guess.

How long have you had the car? Should Evans Halshaw not be helping?

Now I’m confused. ”It just doesn't seem to engage any power and just revs and goes down the gears on the central console once you try to drive it in 6th.“ You said it was a manual, so how does it go down the gears on the central console?

A problem with a DSG gearbox would be easier to comprehend, but a lot more expensive to put right!
