TCR Update
« on: 21 December 2019, 18:14 »
Loving the TCR so far.

Thought I would give it a clean today as its probably be the only chance over the next few days.  Started with a good hoover.  Got to the rear passenger side and lifted the mat out only to find it dripping wet and soaked underneath

Went to VW who said they sometimes see door seals that are faulty and I would need to book it in for a water test - earliest January 2nd.  Appreciate these things happen and its the worst time of the year to get them resolved, but not a happy bunny at the moment.

What about the door speaker seal common problem  ?

There is an easy test to see if the door is leaking. Let me know if you need help.

I’ve just removed both my rear door cards and was surprised when doing a water test, the amount of places drops of water were appearing. Now fixed.

Cheers, thanks.  The technician said they would take the door card off to take a look as thats the other thing that could be the issue.

I think this is more likely that the seal as when I opened the door the sill was all wet.

I know its probably a 5 minute job for someone who knows what they are doing but as with everyone no doubt things are so hectic the next couple of days I don't think I would have chance to look.

The carpet was saturated so not sure if it will need taking out and replacing or not?

I am wondering if its more water ingress from hosing the car off after the last wash rather than through rain...  If so it may have to go without a wash for a few days.

Yep the water collects on the rubber seal and then runs onto the carpet if the door leaks.
I’d tell them to inspect the door seal they think is at fault and also to check behind the door card too.

It will saves 2 trips. Vw know about the speaker seal.

Thanks rob.

I guess I can test the speaker issue by opening the door and using a watering can on the outside of the window?

At least I now know to get two things checked whilst they have it.

Just wondering if carpet will need replacing and how good the job will be if they do it as guess it will be a fairly big job.

Is this just an issue with 5 door golfs?

First of all wipe the underneath of the door where the door card sits on the door.  Then pour water gently on the outside of the window making sure the water trickles down behind the bottom seal on the window.
Leave the door open.
Then look to see if you can see any water dripping from behind the bottom of the door card (by the red reflector) and down the door.

Keep checking for a couple of minutes in case there is only a small leak.

Water should run out of the front of the bottom door seal. That’s normal.

The issue of wet carpet is the insulation will be wet too.
If you haven’t done already. Google about the mk7 door leak and speaker leak and a few posts will come up on various forums and will give you an idea what Vw have done regarding what they fixed and replaced under warranty. This could give you some ammunition.
I’m sure some dried the carpet or replaced the carpet.

Let us know how you get on as I’m sure you won’t be the last. Good luck

By the way, if you want a temporary fix until 2nd January.....

Get some 3M double tape (the sort you use for number plates).
Cut into 1cm pieces and stick them close together under the door card on the door where the door meets the door frame seal. I used about 8 pieces. This stops the seal sitting flush against the door therefore letting any water drain away and not into your car.

Hope this helps.

Thanks again Rob, will do a quick water test when I get 2 mins.

Sounds like a great temporary fix too!

Managed to dry it out to the touch yesterday but not sure if damp remains underneath but haven’t got time to check at that level as drying it out to the touch took some time.

Found a few minutes to do a water test and it is coming in behind the speaker as can see some drips. Not as much as I expected from how wet the inside was.

Maybe it was a build up over time or maybe from when I hosed the car when washing it.

Either way hopefully it will get sorted and I can point them in the direction of what I have observed.
