EEP: EXCESS EMISSION PREMIUM
« on: 13 November 2019, 17:46 »
Bumped into this today but unable to find any real definative information on the net on how it will affect the consumers?

https://www.subaru.co.uk/article/11668/excess-emission-premium

If I'm reading it correctly a Golf GTI puts out 143g co2/km so 48g above the EU target. 48g x 95 euros adds a 4560euro premium to the car.....

I must be mis-understanding it?

It’s news to me but 95g CO2 is ridiculously low. The article started well enough but ended as basically ’buy a Subaru now or else more money’. I do worry where the car market is heading, I really do.

It's the average for the manufacturer not per model. So in VW's case it's the average co2 emissions for every model sold combined. It's why manufacturers are using mild hybrid and indeed hybrid systems to lower emissions on certain specific models.

Yes it's the average across everything they make. But the premium is applied to all sales. So if vw breach the 95g limit by 10g your golf R will have a charge (payable by vw) of 950 euros but so will an Id3... Whether vw pass that on is obviously up to them.

For someone like suburu this could be v expensive because they don't make city cars or evs...

But will they add the average cost to each vehicle - I don't think so, surely they won't want to penalise the the EV brigade so the cars that we all buy will behardest hit.

Was going to order a Polo GTi in April as another car for the misses to keep her out of my Golf, best I make some enquiries now about getting it on order before 1st Jan

It's hard to say how a manufacturer will deal with it but 2700 euros per vehicle to be lost somewhere is not an insignificant amount to swallow for vw.

And before anyone says it, its leveraged at source so doing the big B won't make any difference.
