GTI - Replacement Water pump/Thermostat
« on: 25 October 2019, 19:25 »
Hi All,

My GTi has a coolant leak from the thermostat/water pump housing. I understand its a common problem ...

Just wondering what a fair price is to have this replaced?

I've been quoted £750.

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Out of warranty, I'm guessing?

Age of car? 2013, fair chance the water pump is end of life, 2019 warranty claim.

This happened my 2013 GTi last year. Thermostat housing leaking. Was €1000 from dealer but with VW goodwill due to a lot of complaining I paid €500.

If you have a full VW service history, there is a good chance you may be able to push for some goodwill on the repair.
VW are aware this is a problem, as in, this has happened before, they don't hold their hands up straight away.

I had mine done at the same time as a service and paid around 1/3rd of your quote.

I was happy with that, as it was actually less than the cost of extending the warranty.

Had mine done last year (2013 model) and it was about £500 from an independent garage with genuine parts.

Hi All,

Thank you for the replies.

My car is a late 2014 model and is out of warranty.

I had a 4 year VW service plan until the most recent service a couple of months ago, which was done at an independent garage.

It sounds like I should try the goodwill route.

Do I need a bit of luck to find a good dealer who's happy to push it with VW? Or is it likely to be a standard response?

Thanks again.

Mines an early 14 Gti PP, had same problem, cost £785 at a local garage a few months ago. It's a big fiddly job!
Once the Service plan run out, I started taking it to a local non VW garage for it's service & MOT. That, together with it being 5.5 years old at the time, didn't fill me with any confidence that VV dealer would help out as a good will gesture. Plus the car was already at the local garage, couldn't just take the biz away from them.
Earlier this year, I'd test driven an 7.5R at the dealers and got a quote for what they would give as a part Ex for mine. Turns out if you've taken it elsewhere for a service, they couldn't retail it, and thus meant the Part Ex quote was £1K less!!!!
However - Hope you do manage to get some joy with the dealer, good luck.

Interesting to hear. Tried to book mine in for its first service earlier this year and realised as it's a leased company car, it had the maintenance plan. Leaseplan would not let me get the service done at VW so it went to a small local garage. She said they no longer use main dealers for any servicing.

What a load of nonsense. As long as genuine parts have been used and it's been serviced at the correct schedule  then a dealer should have no reason to offer 1k less on a part exchange.
