Launching regular?
« on: 24 October 2019, 16:29 »
Hi all,

So being from an engineering background I have developed a high level of mechanical sympathy over the years (I think so anyway) and despite being on my second performance Golf I have only ever done 2 full launches (strangely enough both pre purchasing of the cars!). I prefer a rolling start then floor it to try and minimise the stresses involved. I know that Luke from Hampshire photography on YouTube seems to launch his about every 9 minutes and I'm not aware of his blowing up yet but I suppose he's unlikely to shout about it if does so I was just wondered out of all you guys and gals out there, do you use launch regularly? and if so, ever had any problems or are these DSG's really made for it?

Great forum btw

Regards Dean

Don't think any launches can be great but they have built to do it. The GTI suffers a lot of traction issues if you do a full launch start on the BS tyres unless it seriously a warm day. Mine are well past their best now so it would do a lot of scrabbling!

I’ve done it a couple of times just to see what happens but there’s really no point due to the car being FWD and the traction issues it has. Like you I prefer to plant from rolling but even at 30mph in second I light the tyres up sometimes

I'm in the same boat with tyres as approaching 10k and definitely getting ready, not that I want to change the direction of the OP but any suggestions on what to go for? I'm on 18's and from my previous cars I can't believe how reasonably priced they are! (my R was on 19's prets and pretty steep for all 4!)

and just as a side query.... does the TCR use the same LSD as the performance because if it does how on earth does that handle another near 50 brake???

Do people realise the ecu counts how many launches have been done on the car. Might be another get out clause for VW if the car is still in warranty. Just something to think about.

If it says in the handbook how many are permitted maybe then. Otherwise, no. They can try lots of tricks to get out of warranty work but doesn't mean they will be successful.

As far as I know the VAQ is the same but the TCR does have different front and rear suspension geometry.  For "first away from the lights" it's really the amount of torque produced that makes the difference and the TCR and GTI P produce pretty much the same figures.  Stopping wheelspin is more down to traction control than the VAQ and the TCR may have a different mapping for that but it feels very much the same as my 2016 PP although the P Zero's have vastly more grip in any conditions than the S001 and I'd rate them as on a par with the PS4's which replaced my S001. To be clear, I've never tried launch control and probably never will..

true but if you've hammered a car by launching it at every opportunity and then grumble about the gearbox to VW you know how the conversation will go. Not saying it's right but give them any excuse and they'll try and get out of it.

Same as me, I also always turn stop / start off - it feels counter intuitive to let a red hot turbo not warm down (or am I just old and remember the turbo’s from the ‘80’s)

 I'm exactly the same and always turn it off immediately for the same reason.... that and the fact it's really annoying!! It's strange that the most hidden button in a DSG Golf is also the most used!!!
