my car is now locking me in
« on: 13 October 2005, 10:59 »
its done it twice now, (i have the common problem with the passenger door lock) but i unlock the car, open the door get in, shut the door, put the key in the ignition but didn't turn the key in it as i was fiddling in my bag, suddenly the doors lock and the car arms it self!!! with me in it  so i turned the key to start the car, the alarm quickly bleeped all doors unlocked and the car started!! WTF!!!

I know if you unlock the car but don't open any doors it will lock and arm the car again, but the drivers door has been open,
I hope this is not another problem i gotta deal with or would it mite be because of the problem i have with the passenger door lock working intermittent?

it doesnt lock when i press the lock button inside the car (the one by the window switches) and on the remote i have to press it 3 times before it deadlocks on that side and the indicators flash..

My g/f.....soon to be wife on the 22nd (arrrgh!!) has got the 5 door GTI and that only locks from the inside when you press the button near the leccy windows.

My 3 door has the same  button, but only unlocks the passenger door so I cant lock myself in at all.

I read somewhere on this forum about the different settings that the dealers can set by computer VAGCOM.

tis a standard safety feature thats on the car, but it also means the door shut/open switch on your drivers door isnt working.....

the car is set so that if its unlocked by the remote.... and no body actually enters the car/opens door it will lock its self after 30 seconds, normally once the drivers door is opened this cancels it, but if your door switch in playing up (like mine do all the time) it dosnt register that youve opend the door so the car will then lock its self. sooooo

either put key in ignition and turn it on with in 30 secs (this will cancel it), or get your door switch looked at... (you can tell when its playing up as the red light on the dorr dosnt light up when its opened, and your buzzer for leaving your lights on wont work etc....

common mk4 prob im afraid.......

remove your door panel and spray locking mechanism (as switch built in) with electrical contact cleaner.. this works for a month or so for me... we i can be @rsed

thats interesting kniterider, yes my light on the door sometimes works but if you give it a wack it comes on, i just thought that it was a loose connection as the light has done that since i had my window reg repaired last summer, but the locks have only played up for 3months or so, the headlight buzzer always goes off when the door is open tho.  :undecided:

oh no, me hope i dont have a ghost! lol

Had my door lock replaced last month, all the symtoms above plus my alarm led in the door didnt always blink.  Got it done on warranty, but it would only have been £130 if i paid for it :undecided:
