Run in period
« on: 21 June 2019, 19:34 »
Hi, just waiting for delivery of my leased R now which should be next week. Getting excited.
What is the minimum safe run in period or miles for the car?
Someone told me you must drive the first 1000 miles driving like Miss Daisy. Really?
It's not my car long term but don't want to trash it for the next owner or have it blow up on me.
When can I try my first launch in the car?

Thanks

I didn't take mine past 4k revs for the first 300 miles, varied the revs and no full throttle, after that I started to go up to 5k and by 500 miles I was starting to spank it's arse.

Engine tolerances are so good nowadays running in is a thing of the past, just don't labour the engine for the first few hundred miles and make sure it is warm before anything else.

Cheers, so I guess there's no official run in period then that VW insist on which would otherwise void the warranty?
Good news

The warranty will never be an issue as they’ll have no way of knowing whether you followed recommendations or not.
Modern engines may have high tolerance, but car makers still recommend a running in period which , for the golf gti/r is 1500km.
Vary the engine speed, no more than 2/3 top engine speed, no full throttle, then increase gradually.

The general consensus is not to push the revs too high for the first 1000 miles or so. VW wouldn't void your warranty if you did anything like that, but it is supposedly better for the engine long term if you don't. I got mine with 6000 miles on the clock so god knows what it had already been through

Really? It's going to take me 3 months to do 1000 miles.  I've only got a 2 year lease.
Maybe I'm overthinking this. I could just do 300 miles of driving, not going anywhere particular, to get used to the car and gradually increase revs and speed over that time.
I just wondered whether the owners manual insisted on a run in period. Also, I was told the car tracks how you drive for VW to review in case of issues? E.g it definitely tracks each use of launch control.

If you aren’t concerned about long term reliability and efficiency then drive it how you like. Don’t worry about it.
