polo gti split rims

I have just bought a get of polo gti splitties for my golf 1 cabrio, the outer rims are somewhat corroded. My plan is to split them down, get the centers spayed a darker grey, and either polish or chrome plate the rims before putting the back together again.

Heres the question, I don't really fancy polishing them every other day, and its a daily driver, is there any decent lacquer out there for them or any other protective finish. Steve at Premier will paint them at the same time he does his set, but didn't know of any lacquer out there that was up to the task. Or if I do decide to leave em bare polished how often do they need polishing

You will struggle to get laquer to stick to a polished finish and will end up looking gash,
if you polish them get some special wheel wax on em and keep them really clean,
and make sure you get the correct size tool to undo the bolts!

my bbs are polished with dark grey centres too. i should clean them more often than i do but you'll definately need a set of winter wheels. salty roads will kill them in no time. as long as you get busy with the brasso and some wheel wax, it shouldn't be too bad at all!

have you ever heard of anyone chroming them? I really would rather get rid of my old BBS alloys if I could to free up garage space, but if I need the winter wheels then I suppose I will keep 'em

i've asked about chroming wheels and its not only hard to find someone who'll do it, its also pretty damn expensive....

Just need to keep them clean to stop them going bad. Like Robin said I took them off last winter. This winter taking the whole car off the road

Nice bronze cabrio, out of curiosity is your ride height standard,as I think I will have to lower mine a little bit too, or the wheels may look a bit lost under the arches?

 Right sorted then will keep my old ones for the winter. just collected them today, great deal on ebay I have had the tyres removed from them on way back with them. The rims are shot on two of them, so I think there will be lots of long winters nights ahead polishing them ready for the summer

Nice one Mr.S  Your wheels should have a 45 profile tyre on them. When I first put my wheels on the cab it looked like a Golf Country (4x4) as there was a massive gap between the wheels. I've had mine lowered by 40mm and it looks much better, although the front is slightly higher than the back.

I paid £335 for mine a few years ago, they were 5 months old and were like brand new. There are a couple of marks on them now but still in pretty good condition. You'll have to get some pics on here when you get them on your cab

thanks for th, I will post some pics when I am done, took them apart this afternoon. spoke to a wheel refurbisher chappie. It looks like the centres will be powder coated ether in a similar finish to the civic type R wheels, or a shadow chrome like those on the special edition Octavia, who's name escapes me. but one things for sure the rims will be super polished. the stainless bolts are in the dish washer as we speak.....just don't tell the wife!
