Mk7 PP vs Mk7.5 Buying Advice

Hi All,

I've got about £20k to spend and want to get back into a Golf. I have been going around in circles trying to decide what model to get. I only do a few thousand miles a year, no track use, and would be keeping the car as a daily driver for about 10 years.

For my budget I can afford a Mk 7 with performance pack or a Mk 7.5 without performance pack. I like the styling of the Mk7.5 and it would be a newer car but I also like the idea of the LSD on the Mk7. Unfortunately I don't think I can afford a Mk7.5 PP plus the lack of MPI worries me as I want to keep the car for a long time and only do short journeys.

Please help me to make up my mind.

The PP diff is good to have but it's not essential. Get out and look at some cars, you may or may not like the differences between the 7 and 7.5 such as the digital dash for example. Nothing quite like being in front of the metal. Have you decided on gearbox, wheels, colour etc?

Problem I have is that my last car was written off, I've been paid out and have no transport. I'm looking at PH, AT and my local main dealer.

I took a 7.5 manual out for a short test drive and I did like it but I remember in the past when I had FWD cars that they were difficult to get out of junctions fast without spinning the wheels and tons of torque steer. Have things improved since 10-20 years ago or is this why you need an LSD?

I think I will go for the DSG as that's what I'm used to and I read about clutch issues in the manuals. Not sure how true these are but I really don't want the expense of a new clutch in 3 or 4 years time.

Wheels and colour I'm not to fussed about, probably black or white, and 18".

I've got a Mk7 non performance DSG, never had any issues at junctions, esp as I have PS4 tyres too, very grippy, no issues.

I would go for 7.5. That is what I did just before Christmas. I had 22k to spend, and decided I can live without lsd and bigger brakes  , and to me 7.5 looks better

In your position, I would go for the newest 7.5 with the longest warranty and decent spec you can find for your money.

On a side note, main dealer won't budge on prices, says they're fixed by Das WeltAuto, how true is this?

When I dropped into VW last week they were very difficult in adjusting the price they had a 5 dor 2018 PP they were trying to push on me which was a great car but I'm after a 4 door. Not sure how availability will look in about 5 weeks especially as the new 19 plates will be due.

Places like Evans Halshaw and Das Welt are pretty firm on price in my experience. I always like to try and get my car's from a enthusiast if I can, it takes longer but I'm very picky and don't mind traveling all over the UK for the right car. My mates think I'm weird but there you go.
