Winter Tyres/Wheels
« on: 25 January 2019, 08:33 »
Hi all,

I've just joined the forum as I've just placed an order for a white GTI PP (manual) which should be arriving in March. Can't wait! Always wanted a GTi but closest I got was a GTD a few years back.

Have a question about wheels and tyres (NOT my area of expertise!) so hoping someone can help.

I've got a full set of Goodyear UltraGrip Gen 1 winter tyres that cost a fair bit back in late 2017 when I got them. I've been using them on my Merc C350e which will be replaced by the GTi. They are for 17" wheels and Merc's have wider rears to fronts.

The specs are:

fronts are 225/50/R17s

rears are 245/45/R17s.

Given the market for used rubber is pretty rubbish, I'd rather get use out of them myself than end up giving them away.

Will they fit on wheels that I could fit to my GTi? Can the GTi PP take 17" wheels given the larger brakes?

Any advice appreciated. I'll be looking to buy the wheels (but not till end of the year as the snow should be gone by March!) and don't want to spend much on them as the GTi is a lease car over 2 years.

Thanks

Z

Personally I would sell the wheels, you'd be surprised how many people buy secondhand tyres.

Off the top of my head I'd say the tyre sizes are well off and it'd throw your speedometer out. I think people have run 17's but it's very tight.

Thanks Ryan. I tried the Merc forum last March as was going to get rid of the car then (but changed my mind). Got a load of comments back about people not being interested in used rubber these days! Not going to give them away as they cost so much and are not far off brand new with only a total of 2-3k miles on them between last winter and now, so will probably try fleabay once the car goes back.

I sold two tyres on eBay recently, price them right and someone will buy 'em. Failing that could always try asking small tyre shops if they'd be interested in them.

OEM tyre sizes for the GTi are;-

17 inch - 225/45/17

18 inch - 225/40/18

19 inch - 225/35/19

I agree with Ryan, the easiest route would be to sell up and start again. Different tyre walls sizes will put your speedo out slightly, and i'm not sure your insurance company and your lease company would be too pleased about you running a non-standard setup.

You can use this tool to get an idea of the effect of what differing setups will have;-

7.5 GTD

Thanks both.

I'll try them on eBay when the car goes back. If no decent nibbles, I'll keep them and list them again towards the end of the year.

Hi,

Looking at sizes quoted above - I think the 19s run on 235 whereas 18 run on 225.

GTI PP 245; Atlantic Blue, Art Velours, Climate windscreen, KSS, genuine 18" Black Pretoria.

225 for the GTi with 19's,  235 for the R with 19's

R with 18's is still 225 though. All down to wheel width. Pretoria's and Speilberg's are both 8J.
7.5 GTD

The 225/50 you might *just* get away with but I’d not recommend it.
The 245 on a 7.5” wheel will roll around far too much on the rim and the ABS/XDS and all the other motion sensors will be thrown out.
Plus your friendly insurance assessor would not be amused.

As above, eBay.
Wait until next winter for the most interest I’d imagine.
