Hey, great choice in cars!
My Driver has got 206k on the clock and its only just starting to smoke (tiny bit), its only the Valve stem seals worn which is quite common for high mile golfs. Easy enough to change though!
You will find that most parts for Mk2 Golfs are easy to come by and fairly cheap in comparisen to other cars.
If you have any questions at all feel free to ask, this lot at golfGTI.co.uk are a good bunch, and a lot of guys and gals here know their stuff.
Enjoy!

Hi and welcome!
I've also got a 1.6 Driver. Great car, one thing to watch for is the thermostats can be dodgy and apparently are a real begger to replace.
The part itself is cheap but getting to it can be a bit difficult.
Best quote I got for my driver was 814 third party fire & theft,
but I am 22 with 0 No Claims & 0 Experience!

can confirm that the thermostat is a bugger to replace. It comes off easy but to line it up and put it back is a complete mare!!

I pay about £650 fully comp with Zurich; I'm 23 and got 2 yrs NCB.  Bit annoying considering the power of the car  :undecided:
